General Information about the Exam
USP is committed to graduating students who are competent writers.
As a result, students in all majors are required to pass the Writing
Proficiency Exam.
Students have two hours in which to write an essay making a logical
argument on one of two controversial topics given to them at the
exam. The essay must be carefully organized, be supported with specific
details and examples, use appropriate language, and be free of serious
mechanical errors. Students may bring a dictionary, a thesaurus,
an electronic speller, and/or a translating dictionary to the exam.
