Writing Center FAQs

Where is the Writing Center located?
The Writing Center is located in the 4140 Building on the corner of 42nd St. and Woodland Avenue

When is the Writing Center open?
The Writing Center is open from 9am – 5pm Monday – Friday

How long is an appointment?
Each appointment is up to 30 minutes.

What do I need to bring to my tutoring session?
Always bring the written assignment as provided by your instructor
Always bring the rubric your instructor has given you, if one has been given
Always bring your instructor’s or peer’s comments, if you have them
Always bring a draft of your assignment: an introduction, paragraphs, or what you have written, no matter the length

Will the Writing Center edit my paper?
No, the Writing Center is not a drop-off editing service. You need to sit down with the peer tutor, read your paper aloud, brainstorm ideas and discuss questions you have about your writing assignment.

Can the Writing Center assist me with scientific writing assignmenets, disssertations and grant writing?
Yes, assistance with these writing tasks is available to all University students, faculty and staff.

Does the Writing Center help with writing in other languages?
No, the Writing Center only assists you with assignments written in ENGLISH.

Does the Writing Center help students prepare for the WPE (Writing Proficiency Exam)?
Yes, you can join a writing proficiency tutoring group in the fall semester to prepare for the November WPE and you can join a writing proficiency tutoring group in the spring to prepare for the March WPE.

What happens in the writing proficiency tutoring group?
The writing proficiency tutoring group consists of up to 6 students and is facilitated by a peer tutor. You will meet weekly, same time and same day, and you will write a weekly essay and receive feedback and comments.

Who should sign-up for a writing proficiency tutoring group?
Students who are third year and above who have not yet passed the WPE, and second year students who feel they are not strong writers and want to prepare for the March exam during their second year.

How much does the writing assistance cost?
It’s free!
