INFORMATION FOR TRANSFER STUDENTS

How does the Writing Proficiency requirement affect transfer students?
Since transfer students usually enter USP at the start of the third year, they have passed the time that they would normally take the exam. As such, they are assumed to have “failed” the Writing Proficiency Examination. This does not mean that they have been registered anywhere as failing the exam. It simply means that transfer students are automatically eligible to sign a contract in the Writing Center. Transfer students are advised to do this as soon as possible.
What is the Diagnostic Examination in Writing? Is it the same as the Writing Proficiency Exam?

All transfer students are required to take the Diagnostic Examination in Writing (DEW) before they start their first semester; exam dates are scheduled in May, June, and August. The DEW is a 45-minute essay that is used to identify transfer students with writing problems that may make it difficult for them to pass the Writing Proficiency Exam. USP requires this exam because we know that writing standards differ greatly among the schools from which our transfers have come. If you get a letter saying that writing problems were found in your DEW, you should immediately see Dr. Everett, the director of the Writing Center. If you have been identified as an ESL student, see Miriam Gilbert, the assistant director of the Writing Center. You will receive the help that you need to improve your writing skills.

The Writing Proficiency Exam is a 2-hour essay that all USP students must pass in order to graduate. It is more challenging than the DEW.

How are ESL students affected by the Writing Proficiency Exam?
ESL students have to pass the same Writing Proficiency Exam as everyone else. If English is not your first language, you may need several semesters to make the progress necessary to pass. It is critical for you to begin work at once, even before you take the exam. See Prof. Gilbert in the Writing Center. We want to help you prevent a delayed graduation.
