Big Book Club Sponsors Salsa Event
On Wednesday, September 12, 2007, One Big Book
Club sponsored the Salsa Salsa Salsa event to expose USP’s
campus to a Latin dance. Salsa is one form of dance that
can be found in Cuba, which was the setting for the 2007
summer reading program selection, "Waiting for Snow in Havana:
Confessions of a Cuban Boy." Approximately 30 students came
out to learn basic salsa moves and then incorporated them
into a small routine with their partner. The group enjoyed
the lesson from Take the Lead Dance Studio so much that
they suggested USP offer salsa lessons regularly. Whether
students had previous exposure to salsa or were learning
the steps for the first time, there was plenty of excitement
in the ARC that night.
The main goals of the summer reading program are to expose
first year students to an enriching reading experience while
creating a sense of community, acquaint them to the academic
and critical thinking experience, facilitate dialog among
faculty, staff and students, and act as a tool to aid with
the transition to college life. The events planned around
each year’s reading selection focus on the values, culture
and education that USP’s campus community can experience
and appreciate. Look for Cuban food to be available in the
dining hall the entire week of October 22nd, a movie night
in January, as well as a volunteer opportunity some time during
the spring term.
