West Center Short Courses in Computational Chemistry and Related Topics
The West Center Faculty have developed a series of short courses designed to
provide an introduction to industrial scientists and managers new to the tools of
Computational Chemistry, as well as to improve the skills of scientists that
already use this methodology. If you think you might be interested in such a
short course, please review the pdf format
Short Course Fact Sheet for a list
of courses, location, associated fees, and other general information.
The current course schedule for Summer 2005 is listed below. If there is interest
in other topics, or if there is interest in having a course taught at a remote
facility, rather than at USP, please contact the West Center Director
Dr. Preston Moore via e-mail, or
phone (215.596.7537).
Tuition costs are listed after each course. Students enrolled full-time at a
college or university may register for the course at the student rate,
corresponding to 20% of the listed tuition cost.
West Center Short Course Schedule - Summer 2005
(1) Survey of Computational Chemistry - July 18-20 (3-day course)
Instructors: Drs. Preston Moore, faculty and staff
Tuition: $3,000
Description: This course will survey computational applications ranging from
small organic molecules to complex biological systems. The three day workshop
will give an overview of the major computational chemistry methods which are
appropriate for each system, the scientific principles behind each method, where
and when each method is applicable and relevant, what software packages are
available, and the hardware requirements for each method.
Topics to be reviewed will include
Quantum Chemistry: Electronic structure and ab-initio Molecular Dynamics
Molecular Mechanics: Force-fields and docking fundamentals
Molecular Dynamics: Integrators, Ensembles, and extended system techniques
Coarse Grain Methods: New directions in Molecular Dynamics
(2) MOE (Molecular Operating Environments) - July 25 (1-day course)
Instructor: Zhijun Li and staff
Tuition: $1,500
Description: MOE is a comprehensive, computational modeling software. This one-day
short course will give you an overview of various functions available in MOE with
a focus on small molecule modeling, protein homology modeling, and docking.
(3) OpenGL - August 2-3 (2-day course)
Instructor: Dr. Randy Zauhar and staff
Tuition: $2,250
(4) Sybyl - August 8-9 (2-day course)
Instructor: Dr. Guillermo Moyna and staff
Tuition: $2,250
If you would like to register for one of the short courses listed above, open the
pdf format Registration Form,
enter the information requested, print out the form, and then send the completed
form with a check, at least two weeks in advance of the start of the course,
to the address listed on the form.
If unable to complete the form, or if you are interested in attending a course,
but it is less than two weeks from the start of the course, contact Dr. Moore
as indicated above as soon as possible.
In the event that a course is canceled due to failure to meet the minimum
enrollment requirement or other circumstance that prevents us from offering the
course, all tuition payments made will be refunded in full. Additional information
regarding a refund prior to the start of the course can be found on the Short
Course Registration form.
(The West Center Administration reserves the right to make changes in course
offerings, tuition charges and refund policy at any time prior to the start of
a course.)
