Background:

Dr. Downs came to University of the Sciences in Philadelphia in 1972. He served in the U.S. Public Health Service and was a senior resident in hospital pharmacy at the University of Arkansas Medical Center in conjunction with Drug Systems Research. He also served as assistant director of pharmacy-supply service and chief of the Pharmacy Section of the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. He later served as Director of the Department of Society Services of the American Society of Hospital Pharmacists.

He is a member of numerous professional associations, including the American Pharmaceutical Association, American Society of Hospital Pharmacists, Pennsylvania Pharmaceutical Association, National Association of Retail Druggists and the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy, where he was chairman of the Section of Teachers of Pharmacy Practice.

Dr. Downs also is active as a pharmacy consultant to Merck Manual, member of the Medical Advisory Committee, chairman of the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee of Healthcare Management Alternatives, and president of the Health Promotion Council of Southeastern Pennsylvania.
