Dinner and a workshop on Teaching at USP for all newer adjunct faculty

My Advisees and E-Advising functionality for WebAdvisor

All advisors must attend 1 of these workshops

The trainers try to assign test logins and students to those attending training, so it is essential that you RSVP to Kelly Duffy a day or two in advance.

My advisees will allow advisors to view information for their assigned advisees. They will have the ability to view advisee transcripts, Degree Audit program evaluations, schedules and certain test scores. E-Advising will allow advisors and advisees to create an educational plan for the student. Both students and their advisors will have the ability to add courses to a plan. If a student adds a course, it must be approved by an advisor to become part of the student's educational plan. Any course added by an advisor will automatically become part of the educational plan for the student. Graduate, first-year and second-year students will only have the ability to register for courses on their educational plan. The feature will be available for all other students, but will be used as a tool; the registration process will not change for this population. E-Advising is the necessary piece that will allow Graduate, first-year and second year students to register via the WEB.

Faculty Enrichment Workshops for March 2007

1. If you plan to come to any of the sessions focusing on ANGEL, please let us know in advance. Cynthia and Eva will register your name on the ANGEL system. Then you can log on to ANGEL during the session and interact with the system and not just be an observer. Just a reminder, USP's contract with Blackboard expires June 30, 2007. The course management system that we will be using exclusively beginning in July is ANGEL. Currently both systems are operating so you can start to practice with ANGEL.

If you are planning to teach either a summer or fall course on ANGEL, when you register, pelase indicate:

the course title,
course number, and
course section number (or if you are working on a master course that will include multiple sections)

Please feel free to bring a course file that can be used to practice uploading materials into your ANGEL course shell..

Please note: All who plan to teach in the summer are strongly advised to attend whichever sessions is appropriate in order to ensure that you are prepared well in advance of its start.

2. If you have never given a poster at a scholarly conference, or are new to developing posters, you might be interested in attending the session on developing posters.
There will be two opportunities to present a poster at USP during the Spring, 2007.

  • The first is the research scholarly day on April 19 and the deadline for the abstracts is April 9, 2007. We are encouraging people to present all kinds of scholarship

  • The second one is hosted by the Teaching and Learning Center and will focus on teaching practices that work at USP. This poster session will take place on Friday, May 11. The call for submission of abstracts will be posted very soon.

3. These workshops are open to all faculty, adjunct faculty, graduate students and staff for whom these skills are appropriate. Please share this announcement with staff or students who are not on this distribution list.

4. ANGEL training will also be held in May and June 2007.

Dynamed, an evidence based medical decision making data base

In response to clinical faculty requesting an electronic data base on evidence based decision making, electronic services within the library have asked this vendor to demonstrate what they can do. They want feedback on their product and are willing to make reasonable changes to accommodate our needs.

Dynamed "is a clinical reference tool created by a physician for physicians and other health care professionals for use primarily at the point-of-care ....updated daily...monitors the content of over 500 medical journals and systematic evidence review database directly." The product is described at http://www.dynamicmedical.com. A study from the Annals of Family Medicine also looked at the product.

Review of online depositories of educational materials available for free

Jo-Ann Gonzalez-Major.

The ANGEL Object Repository enables storage, tagging, searching, sharing, reuse, and management of learning objects (tutorials, presentations, multimedia teaching units, web resources, exams, etc.). The ability to easily reuse learning objects across courses, sections, departments and schools reduces the investment of effort and time of recreating the material for new courses and additional sections Each instructor has a personal LOR that comes with their ANGEL account, and JoAnn Gonzalez-Major has created two additional repositories containing topic specific tutorial, multimedia drill and practice exercises, virtual labs, videos, and photos that are available for adoption.

This workshop will demonstrate how to copy and/or link resources from the repository into your courses and how to add new content to your personal repository.
