Recent Research and Scholarly Activity

Mac was awarded a $100,000 grant from the National Alliance for Research in Schizophrenia and Depression to study the Suicidal-activation process in persons suffering from Major Depression, Bipolar Disorder, Schizophrenia, and Schizoaffective Disorder.  He continues to work on two other grants, one from the American Foundation for suicide Prevention, the other from HUD, totaling $340,000 dealing with Suicide in Schizophrenia.  He was Editor-in-Chief of Cognitive & Behavioral Practice:  A Journal of the Association for the Advancement of Behavior Therapy.  He received an Award of Recognition from the Association for the Advancement of Behavior Therapy for Distinguished Service as Editor-in-Chief.  He was elected to Fellow Status of Division 42 (Independent Practice) of the American Psychological Association.  He completed his 10th year on the Editorial Board of The Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, and was elected to the Editorial Board of the Journal of Clinical Psychology

He also provided seven gratis evaluations for suicidal patients at Northwestern Institute of Psychiatry and the Montgomery County Emergency Services.  He served on the Program Committee for the Meeting of the Association for the Advancement of Behavior Therapy.  He also served on the APA Division 12-Section 3 (Society of Clinical Psychology as a Science) Selection committee for dissertation of the Year.  In addition, he served as a grant reviewer for the American Foundation for Suicide prevention.  He served as reviewer for 35 manuscripts in very distinguished journals in clinical psychology.  Moreover, he reviewed and edited 102 papers for the final three issues of Volume 7 of Cognitive and Behavioral Practice.  He also served as Chairperson of doctoral dissertation committees of six MCP-Hahnemann students.

Recent Courses Taught:

PS 100  Health Psychology Orientation - Introduction to health psychology as a profession, including current developments and future perspectives.

PS 399  Independent Study/Psychology - Available to students to work in an area of  particular interest under the direction of a faculty member of the department.  May be elected more than once for one, two or three credits.

PS 700  Track Practicum – This course is designed to permit students to gain practical experience working in environments that are relevant to their areas of track-specialization.

PS 707 Advanced Counseling Techniques II – This course extends the skill training of PS706, Advanced Counseling Techniques I, to advanced skills training and practical experience.  This course further introduces the student to the principles of record keeping and report writing and, in addition, introduces the student to research design in counseling.
