Math Professor Chairs National Meeting

USP President Makes Magazine's Top 100 List
University of the Sciences in Philadelphia (USP) President Philip P. Gerbino, PharmD, was recognized as one of the top 100 most inspiring people in the life-sciences industry, according to the August edition of PharmaVOICE magazine. The recognition is based on how individuals have inspired and motivated those around them, their influence as leaders, and their positive impact on the industry through their actions. The top 100 individuals were nominated by readers who identified those who they believe are having the greatest influence on corporate leadership, research and development, technology, creativity, marketing, and strategy. The publication listed Dr. Gerbino under the category of “The Change Agents,” which are identified as vanguards in their respective sectors and industry leaders who are challenging the status quo to make a difference. Symposium Focuses on Leadership and Networking
Leadership and networking ideas and skills will be the focus of a symposium presented by the College of Health Sciences at University of the Sciences in Philadelphia 4-6 p.m., Wednesday, September 14, Glasser Hall (Room 107), located at 4512 Woodland Avenue, Philadelphia, Pa. A panel of three experts will focus on how individuals can influence their organizations and departments and how to lead in difficult situations. The panel will also discuss an innovative method of supervising staff called systems theory, which recognizes the importance of creating and building a network to advance an individual’s ideas. New Medicare Drug Benefit Discussed at USP
The Health Policy Program at University of the Sciences in Philadelphia is hosting a speaker series this fall about the new Medicare drug benefit, which takes effect on January 1, 2006, and is available to more than 42 million Americans. Its structure is complex, and its impact will reach well beyond the beneficiaries to affect drug companies, long-term care providers, insurance companies, and state governments. USP's MBA Program Partners with APhA
The American Pharmacists Association (APhA) has partnered with University of the Sciences in Philadelphia (USP) to promote USP’s MBA in Pharmaceutical Business program to APhA members, as part of a unique educational benefit. This collaboration offers pharmacist members an opportunity to combine science and business skills to create better products, services, and structures that will improve medication use and enhance patient health. APhA members may enroll in courses in USP’s MBA or Executive MBA program at a reduced rate of tuition. This 15 percent reduction in tuition for the first 12 credits will also be extended to the distance learning MBA program as well as the recently launched UK-based Executive MBA program. More...

Biology Professor Receives USP Administrative Fellowship
University of the Sciences in Philadelphia (USP) recently announced that John Porter, PhD, has been named the recipient of the 2005-06 USP Administrative Fellowship. The Fellowship is designed to introduce a faculty member to all aspects of administration at the University, with special emphasis on how the different divisions work together to provide overall leadership. Assistant Dean of Pharmacy Named Academic Advisor of the Year
University of the Sciences in Philadelphia (USP) presented its 2004-05 Academic Advisor of the Year Award to Lisa A. Lawson, PharmD. The award, which is nominated by students, is bestowed annually to a faculty member for excellence in academic advising. Dr. Lawson, assistant dean of pharmacy at USP, was selected among 23 nominees. USP Kicks Off New Academic Year Through Opening Convocation
University of the Sciences in Philadelphia (USP) will celebrate the new academic year with its third-annual opening convocation 2 p.m., Friday, August 26, inside USP’s Athletic/Recreation Center (ARC), located at 43rd Street and Woodland Avenue. Faculty members will don their academic regalia and participate in a procession across campus into the ARC for a special ceremony welcoming new and returning students and faculty to campus. Vinand M. USP Presents Crystal Apple Awards to Two Sayre High Teachers
The Science Teacher Program at University of the Sciences in Philadelphia (USP) honored a pair of teachers from Sayre High School with Crystal Apple Awards. The awards annually recognize teacher contributions to the education of students in their school and their service to the profession and community. Short Courses Offered in Computational Chemistry
The West Center for Computational Chemistry and Drug Design at University of the Sciences in Philadelphia (USP) is offering a series of short courses in the areas of computational chemistry, ranging from courses that provide a broad overview to courses focused on a specific technique and/or application. Courses are aimed at scientists and managers who want to learn how to benefit from computational chemistry in their particular research area, what methods are appropriate, and how to apply these methods to a specific research problem. USP Professor's Painting Displayed at PAFA
Kenneth D. Berman, an adjunct professor of art history/appreciation and drawing at University of the Sciences in Philadelphia (USP), was selected to have his original painting displayed at the Juried Alumni Exhibit at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts (PAFA), located at 1301 Cherry Street, Philadelphia, Pa. Berman created a self-portrait that fuses the tradition of classical portraiture in art history with contemporary conceptual art. The painting is made with Rembrandt’s tonal glazing technique and, at the same time, is influenced by Gerhard Richter’s experimental paintings from the 1980s which explore the relationship between the photographic process, point of view, and painting. PennDOT Presents USP With Hometown Streets Grant
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) recently presented University of the Sciences in Philadelphia (USP) with $530,420 in Hometown Streets funding to help support the University’s Woodland Avenue Streetscapes project. The University is planning to link its various facilities to create a more contiguous campus by utilizing standardized paving elements and colors. More...

Just before the start of University of the Sciences in Philadelphia’s (USP) third annual major health policy symposium on May 10, USP President Dr. Philip P. Gerbino was presented with a $750,000 unrestricted educational grant from AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals. Health Policy Institute Director Receives Honor
The College of Physicians of Philadelphia (CPP) has recently named Richard G. Stefanacci, DO, MGH, MBA, AGSF, CMD as a fellow. Dr. Stefanacci is the executive director of University of the Sciences in Philadelphia’s (USP) Health Policy Institute (HPI). The HPI provides supportive services and analyses to public health policy leaders. As one of the more than 1,700 fellows at CPP, Dr. Stefanacci will vote for College’s officers and by-laws and may also serve on College committees and specialty sections. More...

University of the Sciences in Philadelphia (USP) recently presented the 2005 Lindback Foundation Award for Distinguished Teaching to Raymond F. Orzechowski, PhD, a professor of pharmacology and toxicology at USP. The Lindback Award, which is funded through a gift from the Christian R. and Mary F. Lindback Foundation, annually recognizes full-time faculty members with excellent records of teaching. Campus Quad Design Recognized with Landscape Award
The Pennsylvania/Delaware chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) recently bestowed one of its annual Merit Awards to the Simone Jaffe Collins, the landscape architect that designed and constructed the quadrangle at University of the Sciences in Philadelphia (USP). The ASLA Merit Award recognizes outstanding work and excellence in landscape architect.

USP Dean Serves on NIH Health Section
C. Reynold Verret, PhD, has agreed to serve a three-year term as a member of the Enabling Bioanalytical and Biophysical Technologies Study Section of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Center for Scientific Review. Dr. Verret, dean of the Misher College of Arts and Sciences at University of the Sciences in Philadelphia (USP), will be responsible for helping to review grant applications submitted to the NIH, make recommendations on these applications to the appropriate NIH national advisory council or board, and survey the status of research in their fields of science. World-Renowned Anatomy Artist's Work Displayed

Netter, M.D. (1906-1991), a world-renowned anatomy artist who is regarded by many as the most accomplished and influential medical illustrator of the 20th century. The National Intramural and Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA) recently presented its Will Holsberry Scholarship Award to Terry Dougherty, director of fitness and wellness for USP's Athletic/Recreation Center. The award is given to an individual at a director’s level who has 10 or more years of involvement and dedication to the NIRSA. She is president of the Pennsylvania Intramural and Recreational Sports Association (PIRSA) and NIRSA’s state director for Pennsylvania. She is also a certified recreational sports specialist.

USP's First All-Male Dance Team Wins Contest
When University of the Sciences in Philadelphia (USP) students Mayank Amin and Jatin Patel started to organize an all-male dance team on campus, their idea wasn’t met with many open arms—or dancing feet for that matter. BW Course Offered on Medical Publishing
The MS Program in Biomedical Writing at University of the Sciences in Philadelphia (USP) will offer a combined online, onsite course on medical publishing this summer. This seven-week course will teach students how to publish and about the copyright process. USP Receives Prestigious Merck Research Grant
University of the Sciences in Philadelphia (USP) and Ursinus College are among 15 colleges and universities nationwide named by The Merck Company Foundation and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) as recipients of a three-year, $60,000 Merck/AAAS Undergraduate Science Research Award. Ursinus and USP are the only colleges in Pennsylvania to have received the award. The winners were announced during the 2005 AAAS Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C., during the week of Feb. 15. Occupational Therapy Chairperson Receives National Award
The American Occupational Therapy Foundation recently announced that Paula Kramer, Ph.D., OTR/L, FAOTA, has been named the recipient of the A. Jean Ayres Award. The award recognizes occupational therapy clinicians, educators, and researchers who have demonstrated sustained commitment to the application, development, or testing of theory in occupational therapy. It is given in honor of A. Jean Ayres, PhD, OTR, whose concentration on developing theory in support of practice was of great significance to the profession of occupational therapy. USP Health Tip - Endometriosis
Endometriosis is a common gynecological disease, affecting more than 5.5 million women in North America, but its cause and prevention remain unknown. Pain and infertility are the two most common indicators, but some women who are diagnosed with the disease report no symptoms. Endometriosis contributes to infertility in 30 to 40 percent of affected patients. The pain can affect a woman’s quality of life, including intimate relationships and day-to-day activities. More...

is the recipient of their fourth annual Academic Advising Writing Competition Award. The competition invited academic advisors to describe their relationship with an advisee that best illustrates their philosophy of advising. Northcutt, a professional academic advisor at University of the Sciences in Philadelphia (USP), received a $500 cash prize for her winning entry. USP Student and Professor Participate in Festival at The Brick Playhouse in Philadelphia
A University of the Sciences in Philadelphia (USP) student and professor will participate in the Eighth Annual “Night of 1,000 Plays,” a play festival held by The Brick Playhouse, Philadelphia's premier developmental center and presenting company for new theater. The festival, which will take place 8 a.m., February 14-18 and February 21-25 at The Playground at The Adrienne Theater, 2030 Sansom Street, consists of about 35 short plays, each of them less than three minutes long, performed each evening. University of the Sciences in Philadelphia (USP) will celebrate Black History Month with a guest lecture from Calvin B. Johnson, M.D., secretary of the Pennsylvania Department of Health, 1 p.m., Thursday, February 3, in Griffith Hall (Room A), located at 600 S. 43rd Street, Philadelphia, Pa. Chemistry Professor Receives National Award
Guillermo Moyna, PhD, assistant professor of chemistry at University of the Sciences in Philadelphia, has been awarded one of nine 2004 Henry Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar Awards presented nationwide. The $60,000 unrestricted grant, given by the Camille and Henry Dreyfus Foundation, recognizes faculty accomplishments in scholarly research with undergraduates, as well as a compelling commitment to teaching. Criteria for selection included an independent body of scholarship and a commitment to education that signaled the promise of continuing outstanding contributions to both research and teaching.
