New Members Elected to USP's Board of Trustees

Three new members were elected to serve on the Board of Trustees of University of the Sciences in Philadelphia. The responsibilities of USP’s Board of Trustees include approving the University’s strategic plans and insuring their consistency with the institution’s mission and goals. The new members are Ruth A. Brown of Sea Isle City, N.J., Dr. Schumarry H. Chao of San Diego, Calif., and Dr. Barry Grossbach of Philadelphia, Pa.

Ruth A. Brown
Brown has more than 30 years experience in the pharmacy field. She is currently the pharmacy manager at Taylor Hospital-Crozer Keystone Health System, and is also a per diem pharmacist for the Atlantic City Medical Center. She has been an active participant of several pharmacy associations, including a member of the House of Delegates of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists, chairperson of the Center for Proper Medication Use, and a former presidential officer and chairperson of the Pennsylvania Society of Health-System Pharmacists. She has been a presidential officer of USP’s Alumni Association since 1999.

She is pursuing a Master of Science degree in biomedical writing at USP.

Dr. Schumarry H. Chao
Dr. Chao is the chief medical officer and senior vice president of strategic development at MedImpact Health Care Systems, Inc., where she provides direction, supervision and support for medical issues in product development and pharmacy benefits management. She also is responsible for the development of medical informatics initiatives and leads senior management in the development of strategic and marketing plans. She is also the founder and president of SHC & Associates, a consulting company specializing in health care solutions for pragmatic strategic planning and implementation for all sides of health care. In addition, she has served as an assistant professor and clinical professor in the School of Medicine of University of Southern California (USC) since 1978. She also is currently an adjunct associate professor of pharmaceutics in the School of Pharmacy at USC.

Dr. Barry Grossbach
Dr. Grossbach is a retired Community College of Philadelphia (CCP) history professor, who has been a resident of University City since 1970. During and after his 34 years of teaching at CCP, he has been heavily involved in numerous community organizations, including the Spruce Hill Community Association, where he currently serves as executive vice president. He is the president of the Spruce Hill Community Trust. He is involved in University City District, where he acts as a member of the Board of Directors and chair of the marketing committee.

University of the Sciences in Philadelphia is a private, coeducational institution founded in 1821 as Philadelphia College of Pharmacy, the first college of pharmacy in North America. USP specializes in educating students for rewarding careers through its undergraduate, graduate and doctoral degree programs in the health and related sciences.
