University
of the Sciences in Philadelphia Establishes Student Leadership
Center
Grooming
future leaders in the ever-emerging health and science fields
has always been a focus at University of the Sciences in Philadelphia
(USP). The University has enhanced this objective by establishing
its Student Leadership Center, designed to provide leadership
programs for USP students and selected secondary education
students. According to Len Farber, USP’s director of
student life, the center, through its innovative and structured
programs, aims to “empower our students to not only
think about leadership and its applications but how they can
empower other students to promote leadership on our campus,
the community around us and in their chosen career.”
Listed below are some features of the center:
Programs for USP students:
· Leadership Development Course – This social
science course is designed to introduce students to key components
(behaviors and characteristics) that have been found to be
integral to successful leadership
· Fall Leadership Conference – This two-day conference
facilitates training for all new and returning student leaders.
· Emerging Leader Workshop – This series of five
workshops is designed to develop the skills of new leaders
and prepare them as they take on advanced responsibilities
within their organizations.
· Organizational Development Consultation and Workshops
– Through consultation and workshops students will gain
information and training to further enhance their organizations.
· Co-curricular Transcript – The transcript will
document meaningful co-curricular experiences and achievements
that demonstrate the individual’s leadership abilities.
· Leadership Library – The library will have
the latest books and resources for students. Many resources
will be available on-line for students including leadership
assessment tools.
· Leadership Scholars Program – This is a curriculum-based
structured program that provides a unified, structured learning
experience for the development of the student as a leader
over the course of the entire college experience. Students
enrolled in the program will live in a small learning community
within the residence hall and share other common experiences
with their academic experience.
Programs for Secondary Education Students
· Pre-College
Leadership Institute – This program is designed for
students completing their junior year of high school with
an interest in health care/sciences and leadership.
· Fall Leadership Program – This program will
take place on Saturdays and will include partnering with
a USP student for community service activities. The program
will explore the relationship between leadership and civic
responsibilities.
· Leadership Library – The library will help
to serve secondary students who hope to achieve a broader
understanding of the issues of leadership, civic involvement,
and connections to health care/sciences.
