Retired CEO Joins Health Policy Program
Dr. Robert D. Martin, recently retired CEO of the University of Pennsylvania Health System, recently joined the adjunct faculty of USP's Health Policy Program. USP Hosts Chemistry Demonstrations for Children
Children of all ages will be welcomed to University of the Sciences in Philadelphia on Saturday, December 13, 10 a.m., during an annual chemistry demonstration organized by the Philadelphia Section of the American Chemical Society. University of the Sciences in Philadelphia Presents Exhibiti on World-Famous Alumnus Henry S. Wellcome
University of the Sciences in Philadelphia (USP) will hold a special exhibit to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Henry S. Wellcome’s honorary master’s degree in pharmacy awarded by Philadelphia College of Pharmacy (PCP), now USP, in 1903. The exhibit, which opens Thursday, December 4, in the Marvin Samson Center for the History of Pharmacy at USP, features Wellcome artifacts, photographs and other items from the museum’s collection—now on display. University of the Sciences in Philadelphia to Dedicate New Arena to Former Longtime Basketball Coach
University of the Sciences in Philadelphia (USP) will dedicate its new basketball arena after former longtime coach and current athletic director Robert C. “Bobby” Morgan on Saturday, November 22, 2:30 p.m., inside USP’s Athletic/Recreation Center (ARC), located at 43rd Street and Woodland Avenue. The University will recognize Morgan’s achievements and induction into the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame in a ceremony between games of the opening basketball doubleheader at USP’s new ARC. USP Hosts Sherlock Holmes Society
Sherlock Holmes’ reference to a mysterious poison in Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s The Adventure of the Devil’s-Foot was a topic of discussion at University of the Sciences in Philadelphia on October 25. Members of the Mycroft League, a Philadelphia society of Sherlock Holmes, converged on campus to converse about a poison Watson, Holmes’ trusty sidekick, called radix pedis diaboli or the Devil’s Foot root. Unknown to science, the Devil’s Foot root has baffled and fascinated toxicologists since The Strand Magazine published the short story in 1910. More...

Dr. George Downs to Retire From Post as Dean
University of the Sciences in Philadelphia (USP) recently announced the retirement of George Downs, PharmD, dean of the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy. Dr. Downs, who has been associated with the university for more than 30 years, will remain as dean until the end of the academic year in 2004.

Pharmacy Professor Named Recipient of APhA Award
The American Pharmacists Association (APhA) recently announced that Daniel Hussar, Ph.D. has been selected as the recipient of the Hugo H. Schaefer Award for 2004. The Hugo H. Schaefer Award is a national honor established by the American Pharmacists Association in 1964 recognizing outstanding voluntary contributions to society, to the profession of pharmacy, and the APhA. Dr. Hussar is the Remington professor of pharmacy of the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy at University of the Sciences in Philadelphia (USP).

Volleyball Player Receives Honor
University of the Sciences in Philadelphia’s women’s volleyball player Emily Roth was recently named the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference’s (CACC) Volleyball Player of the Week. Roth, a sophomore middle hitter, helped lead the Devils to a 3-2 victory over Nyack College. In the match, she recorded 16 kills with only one error in 51 attempts for a .294 hitting percentage. Roth also recorded 23 digs and five blocks in the match.

Morgan Inducted Into NAIA Basketball Hall Of Fame
The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) recently announced that University of the Sciences in Philadelphia Athletic Director and former men’s basketball coach Robert C. “Bobby” Morgan will be inducted into the NAIA Basketball Hall of Fame at the NAIA Division I National Championship in March 2004 in Kansas City, Miss. More Than 60 Companies to Attend USP's Annual Fall Career Exposition
It may be early in the academic year, but students at University of the Sciences in Philadelphia will get an early opportunity to meet personally with numerous health and science employers at USP’s Annual Fall Career Exposition on Thursday, September 25. Inside USP’s new multi-million-dollar Athletic/Recreation Center, the career exposition, sponsored by the Career Services Department at USP, will welcome more than 60 companies who will be looking to recruit USP students from various disciplines of study. University of the Sciences in Philadelphia Launches Security Bike Patrol
In an effort to provide more visibility for its security officers and create a more secure environment for students, University of the Sciences in Philadelphia (USP) recently initiated a Security Bike Patrol. The bike officers will patrol USP’s campus, including the new Athletic Recreation Center, residence halls and parking lots, Mondays through Fridays, 8 a.m. to midnight, and on the weekends, noon to 8 p.m. The bike officers will complement the security efforts already in place at USP. USP's Summer GEAR UP Program for Middle and High School Students Concludes
After four weeks of enhancing the communication, mathematics and science skills of 22 middle and high school students from the Southwest Academic Area, the Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) Summer Enrichment project at University of the Sciences in Philadelphia (USP) will conclude on July 31. Family and friends will join the students and GEAR UP mentors on USP’s campus, 600 S. 43rd Street, 6 p.m., Griffith Hall A, for the program’s closing ceremonies, which will include presentations on African American authors, poetry readings, banner and poster exhibits and skits relating to possible careers in the science field. University of the Sciences in Philadelphia Granted Active NCAA Division II Membership
University of the Sciences in Philadelphia (USP) has recently been granted active membership in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II by the Association’s Membership Committee, effective September 1, 2003. As an active member of the NCAA, USP has the right to compete in NCAA championships, to vote on legislation and other issues before the Association, and to enjoy other privileges of membership designated in the constitution and bylaws of the Association. USP Professor Receives Lindback Teaching Grant
The Christian R. & Mary F. Lindback Foundation recently presented a Minority Junior Faculty Award to Dr. Deepika Vadher, assistant professor of clinical pharmacy at University of the Sciences in Philadelphia. The award will support her research in examining the relationship between health literacy and medication adherence in patients diagnosed as hypertensive and diabetic, two diseases that are costly to society and require a significant amount of patient self-management to be optimally controlled. The Philadelphia College of Pharmacy at University of the Sciences in Philadelphia (USP) has recently named Dr. Adeboye Adejare of Pocatello, Idaho as associate professor and chair of the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences. Medicare Symposium Focuses on Reform
At a symposium focusing on Medicare reform at University of the Sciences in Philadelphia (USP) last week, the three immediate past administrators of the Centers for Medicaid and Medicare (CMS, formerly HCFA) agreed that while the Medicare system needs broad reform, short-term solutions such as fixed government contributions or changing purchasing contracts will not address the overall needs. Occupational Therapy Students at USP Participate in Community Outreach Program
Dr. Roger Ideishi understands the value of contributing to surrounding communities and society. And now his students do as well. While Dr. Ideishi, assistant professor of occupational therapy at University of the Sciences in Philadelphia, teaches three courses that have a strong emphasis in community outreach, his students are getting much more than a classroom learning experience. His students are making a difference by participating in community service activities, including designing and creating a community garden and children’s playground. USP’s Production of “The Vagina Monologues” Raises Awareness in the Fight Against Violence to Women

University of the Sciences in Philadelphia (USP) will present a benefit production of The Vagina Monologues on Feb 18-20, 8 p.m., in the Student Wilson Center, 708 South 42nd Street, as part of the 2003 V-Day College Campaign. Through V-Day campaigns, local volunteers and college students produce annual benefit performances of The Vagina Monologues to raise awareness and funds for anti-violence groups within their own communities. USP is one of the more than 660 colleges and universities around the world that will perform the play to show support of the campaign. Admission is $10 for the general public, $7 for USP students. The next time you order a banana split or sip on a banana daiquiri by the poolside, make sure you savor the sweet taste of the popular yellow fruit, because it may go the path of the mighty dinosaurs – extinction. That’s right, the crescent-shaped fruit, which is one of the largest agricultural products in the world, is in for the fight of its life against a plague of pests and diseases. The banana’s biggest foe is Black Sigatoka, a fungal disease that affects the fruit’s all-important leaf area, causing premature ripening and reducing the productive life of the banana. From the debris and unsanitary conditions of a vacant lot at 43rd Street and Chester Avenue will blossom vibrant flowers and vegetation as well as a captivating outdoor classroom for students at University of the Sciences in Philadelphia (USP). USP Professor Honored By Presbyterian Homes and Services Inc.

Paula Kramer, Ph.D., OTR/L, FAOTA, of Plainsboro, N.J. (08536), recently received a service recognition award from Presbyterian Homes & Services (PHS), Inc., for her six years of contribution to PHS’ Board of Trustees. Dr. Kramer, chair of the Department of Occupational Therapy at University of the Sciences in Philadelphia (USP), has headed the non-for-profit organization’s nominations and planning and development committees, and has served as a member of the executive committee. She also has received two grants from PHS’ foundation, which provided occupational therapy programs using a lifestyle redesign approach for seniors in affordable housing communities.  More...

University of the Sciences in Philadelphia (USP) will host a one-night lecture/exhibition from Aleksandra Vasik-Lalovic, an international artist from Yugoslavia currently living in Southern New Jersey, on Tuesday, January 21, in the Upper Crust Lounge, located on USP’s campus at 43rd Street and Woodland Avenue. National Center for Homeopathy Donates Grant to Support Alternative Medicine Course at University of the Sciences in Philadelphia

University of the Sciences in Philadelphia (USP) recently received a $5,000 grant from the National Center for Homeopathy (NCH) to help support a physician assistant course on alternative medicine. The course, “PHA 203 Alternative Therapies in Medicine,” introduces students to the various alternative medicines and treatments available to patients, and their impact on traditional mainstream medicine.
