Annual Alumni Award
Bestowed on an alumnus distinguished through contributions
in outstanding fashion to a profession, science and/or mankind
Joseph L. Fink III is Vice
President for Corporate Relations and Economic Outreach,
Associate Vice President for Research at the University
of Kentucky, a Professor of Pharmacy at the UK College of
Pharmacy and Professor of Health Administration and Professor
of Public Health at UK. He also is a Professor in the Martin
School of Public Policy and Administration. He holds appointments
as a Faculty Associate with the UK Center for Health Services
Management and Research as well as a Faculty Associate with
the Multidisciplinary Research Center on Drug and Alcohol
Abuse. He has served as Special Assistant to the President
for Academic Affairs at UK and was Associate Vice Chancellor
for Academic Affairs at UK from 1988 to 1996. He was Assistant
Dean of the UK College of Pharmacy from 1981 to 1988.
He is licensed to practice
pharmacy in two states and has been admitted to the practice
of law in Kentucky and Pennsylvania as well as before the
United States Supreme Court. He is also trained in both
general mediation and health care mediation.
He served on the faculty of
USP from 1973 to 1981. During 1985-86 he served as American
Council on Education Fellowship in Academic Administration.
He is a Fellow of APhA and
serves as Parliamentarian of the House of Delegates of the
Association. He was founder and first president of the American
Society for Pharmacy Law and, while a pharmacy student,
was National President of the Student American Pharmaceutical
Association. Among his many awards are “Pharmacist-of-the-Year,”
Distinguished Service Award, twice the recipient of the
“Great Teacher Award.”
For twenty years he has been an editor of Pharmacy Law Digest,
the most widely used pharmacy law text and reference in
the United States.
Ivor Griffith Service
Award
Bestowed annually upon an alumnus who is distinguished
through voluntarily giving his/her time and service in outstanding
fashion to the University either directly or through participation
in the USP Alumni Association
Ronald D. Kaufmann is Vice
President of Acquisitions, Real Estate and Business Development
for the FamilyMeds corporation of Farmington, CT. His responsibilities
include mergers, acquisitions, retail site selection, leases
and organic business development. He reports directly to
the President and CEO, Ed Mercadante ‘79P.
In 1997 Mr. Kaufmann joined
the Arrow Corporation (which later became FamilyMeds) from
the Clover Division of Strawbridge and Clothier where he
served as Director of Pharmacy. He held this position since
1979. He had full responsibility for all pharmacy operations
including budgeting, third party accounting, multiple store
operations, purchasing, acquisitions and finally the sale
and transitions of each pharmacy. Prior to joining Clover,
Mr. Kaufmann owned and operated two community retail pharmacies
in Philadelphia, PA.
He was elected to the Board
of Trustees in 1987, elected Vice-Chair in 1994 and Chairman
of the Board in 1995. In 1998, he was elected the first
Chairman of the Board of Trustees of University of the Sciences
in Philadelphia and served in that capacity until 2000.
Mr. Kaufmann is still an active member of the Board of Trustees.
He took an active role in helping reengineer the College
into a University. Previously he served as President of
the Alumni Association.
Mr. Kaufmann is licensed to
practice pharmacy in four states. Throughout his professional
career, Mr. Kaufmann has been active in local, state and
national pharmacy associations. He has served as a consultant
to pharmaceutical manufacturers and on several practitioner
panels including the first edition of Evaluation of Drug
Interactions and on Pharmacy Times “Pharmacy and Industry
Stand Tall” symposium.
Young Alumnus Award
Bestowed annually on an alumnus who has received a degree
within the last 15 years and has been distinguished through
contributions in outstanding fashion to his/her profession,
science and/or mankind
Michael Stern is Director ofTechnological
Applications at Titan Scan Technologies Corp., the recognized
leader in medical device sterilization utilizing electron
beam technology.
Mr. Stern began his career
as a Research Chemist in Research and Development and Technical
Service with the Engineered Materials and Specialty Chemicals
business units of AlliedSignal in Morristown, NJ. After
spending four years as Applications Development Manager
with E-BEAM Services, Inc. in Cranbury, NJ, in the fall
of 2001, Mr. Stern was recruited by Titan Scan Technologies
to join its leadership team. Shortly after joining Titan,
Mr. Stern had the opportunity to contribute his technical
expertise to the development of integrated irradiation system
solutions to eradicate the complete spectrum of biological
threats in the mail following the anthrax crisis.
Mr. Stern’s articles
and papers on the subject of irradiation processing of various
industrial products have appeared in several major industry
publications, including Plastics Engineering, Wire &
Cable Technology International and SAMPE Journal. In 1999,
he was the recipient of the Best Paper Award for his review
paper, “Electron-Beam Curing of Polymeric Composites
as an Enabling Technology for Advanced Manufacturing”
at the 1999 International Composites Expo.
In January 2002, Mr. Stern
graduated Beta Gamma Sigma from LaSalle University’s
School of Business Administration with an MBA in Marketing.
Honorary Alumnus Award
Bestowed annually upon a non-alumnus who has shown exemplary
dedication and commitment to the mission of USP
Mignon Adams came to the University
in the fall of 1985 as only the third librarian to be appointed
head of the J. W. England Library. She had previously been
the associate library director at the State University of
New York in Oswego. She holds a BS degree in English from
Eastern Illinois University, and an MSLS from the University
of Illinois.
The past 20 years have seen
the complete transformation of academic libraries. Ms. Adams
has overseen the exciting transition from a print-based
collection to an electronic one. The library was the first
networked building on campus, and librarians the first to
become e-mail users. In 1995, the library staff created
the first University web page. Now, the Library offers a
full spectrum of electronic resources, including 6000 journals,
most of them accessible through any University computer.
Ms. Adams has been active in
the Libraries and Educational Resources Section of the American
Association of Colleges of Pharmacy, the local chapter of
the Medical Library Association, and the Association of
College and Research Libraries. Through this last organization,
she has led the annual seminar in a national mentoring program
for new college library directors.
Men's Athletic Hall
of Fame Award
Bestowed upon an individual who has demonstrated outstanding
career accomplishments, leadership and commitment to his
sport
Jack Kelly is the National
Account Manager of Trade & Pharmacy Development at Sankyo
Pharma Inc., where he is building a Pharmacy Affairs capability
for the company in the United States. Prior to his current
position, Jack headed up the new-hire Sales Training curriculum
as Sankyo expanded from 180 to 500 sales representatives.
Jack was one of the inaugural employees at Sankyo when the
Tokyo, Japan based company set out to build a presence in
the United States pharmaceutical industry in early 1997.
Jack spent 10 years with Bristol-Myers
Squibb Company prior to joining Sankyo Pharma. While at
Bristol-Myers Squibb he also worked as a part-time pharmacist
at Easton Hospital and occasionally filled in at his wife’s
family drugstore, Bell Apothecary.
His first job after graduation
was with Rite Aid Corporation as a floating pharmacist throughout
the Philadelphia region, where he was ultimately promoted
to a Pharmacy Manager before embarking on his career in
the pharmaceutical industry.
Women's Athletic Hall
of Fame Award
Bestowed upon an individual who has demonstrated outstanding
career accomplishments, leadership and commitment to her
sport
Diane Lesiak is currently
Pharmacy Manager of ShopRite Pharmacy in Bayonne, NJ. This
is a position she has held for the past seven years. In
2001, Ms. Lesiak completed a training program in San Francisco,
CA, to become a certified HIV/AIDS education specialist
and occupies a position as an adjunct faculty member at
UMDNJ in Newark, NJ.
At USP, Diane was a four-year
starter in softball and also competed in tennis and basketball.
Diane was elected to the NAIA All-District team in her Junior
and Senior years. In 1991, she became the second student
in USP history to be named to the NAIA All-American, All-Academic
team.
After graduation, Diane continued
her interest in softball competing on local slow pitch and
fast pitch teams. She is currently an active member on Fall,
Spring and Summer softball teams, the latter of which has
been the league championship for the last seven years.
University of the Sciences in Philadelphia is a private,
coeducational institution founded in 1821 as Philadelphia
College of Pharmacy, the first college of pharmacy in North
America. USP specializes in educating students for rewarding
careers through its undergraduate, graduate and doctoral
degree programs in the health and related sciences.
