University
of the Sciences in Philadelphia’s “Scholarly Day”
To Feature Lecture By Penn Professor
University
of the Sciences in Philadelphia (USP) is holding its “Scholarly
Day,” featuring the 16th Annual John C. Krantz, Jr.
Distinguished Lecture, presented this year by Dr. Charles
O’Brien of the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. O’Brien’s
lecture, titled “Developing New Medications for the
Treatment of Addictive Disorders,” will be presented
on Thursday, April 10, 1 p.m. in Griffith Hall (Room A), located
at 600 S. 43rd Street. A reception will be held in Rosenberger
Auditorium following the lecture. In addition, USP’s
Scholarly Day will include a Graduate Research Symposium and
the 14th Annual Sigma Xi Undergraduate Research Symposium.
Both symposiums will be held on USP’s campus from 2:00

Dr.
Charles O'Brien, professor and vice chair of psychiatry, has
been at University of Pennsylvania since 1969. He is director
of the University's Center for Studies of Addiction and chief
of psychiatry at the Philadelphia Veterans Affairs Medical
Center. Working in the psychopharmacology of addiction, his
team and he have been responsible for numerous discoveries
that have improved the results of treatment for addictive
disorders. A member of the Institute of Medicine of the National
Academy of Sciences, he also holds an honorary doctorate from
Bordeaux, and was recently elected president of the American
College of Neuropsychopharmacology.
The
John C. Krantz, Jr. Distinguished Lecture was established
in 1984 in honor and memory of John Christian Krantz, Jr.,
Ph.D., who was the chairman of the Department of Pharmacology
at the University of Maryland School of Medicine from 1932
to 1965. Dr. Krantz served 13 years as a member of USP’s
Board of Trustees. Through the annual lecture, USP continues
to honor Dr. Krantz’s distinguished career, humanitarianism
and his positive influence on generations of physicians and
medical scientists.
