New
Drugs Marketed in 2001 May Be Small in Number, But Not
in Importance
--
A University of the Sciences in Philadelphia Health
Tip --
There
were a total of 26 therapeutic agents that reached the
United States market for the first time in 2001.
This marked the smallest number of new therapeutic
agents to hit the U.S. market since 1995, when only
23 new medications were unveiled in the states.
According to Dr. Daniel Hussar, Remington professor
of pharmacy at Philadelphia College of Pharmacy at University
of the Sciences in Philadelphia, there may have been
a decrease in the number of newer medications released
to Americans, but some of them have significant advantages
over older medications.
"The
new medications have a wider range of uses," says Dr.
Hussar, "and a number of them have mechanisms of action
or other characteristics that distinguish them from
previously marketed drugs."

Dr.
Hussar says these new therapeutic agents may be confusing
to the general public, adding that individuals should
consult their local pharmacist.
"Pharmacists have the most comprehensive knowledge
of medications on the market," says Dr. Hussar.
"Pharmacists understand the properties of these
new therapeutic agents and can effectively counsel
patients about their use and serve as a valuable source
of information for other health professionals regarding
these drugs."
