University
of the Sciences in Philadelphia Sponsors
Science Fair at Wilson Elementary School
The
scientists of the future recently exhibited their skills in front of a
panel of University of the Sciences in Philadelphia (USP) judges at Alexander
Wilson Elementary School. USP
sponsored a science fair for students in the local grade school, located
at 46th Street and Woodland Avenue, April 2-6.
Students from kindergarten through fifth grade demonstrated their
science prowess skills by creating and presenting their own experiments,
such as the influence of weight on the flight of a paper airplane and
the effect of height when dropping a liquid from various altitudes.
Each student received a certificate of participation, and the top
winners in each age group also received ribbons.
According
to Dr. Lois Peck, director of the Science
Teacher Certification Program at USP, the science fair is an excellent
vehicle to illustrate the ingenuity and creativity of young minds.
"This
event proves children can do well in science at a very young age," says
Dr. Peck. "Children in inner
cities or in other locations can achieve, but they all need something
in common - an opportunity. This
fair is an opportunity for them to accomplish certain goals.
It's been great. The children are having fun, and the students, faculty and
administrators involved from USP are having a great experience."
