University of the Sciences in Philadelphia to Hold Celebration of Music From Around the World

University of the Sciences in Philadelphia (USP) will present "The Misher Week of World Music," a celebration of music from around the world in its intellectual context, from April 8-12. The Misher Week will highlight the richness of world music and will show another way to understand and value the great diversity of people.  Audiences will hear and see drummers from Japan, dancers from India, South American and African singers, a Klezmer band and many other groups who make music unique to their own national tradition and ethnic heritage. George Ruckert, senior lecturer in ethnomusicology at MIT, will be in residence all week.  He will give a public lecture on "World Music in the 21st Century."  He will also teach various classes, be available for discussion, and perform on Monday afternoon for the general public. The Misher Week honors former USP President Allen Misher.  Admission is free and open to the public.  For more information, call (215) 596-8895.

All performances will be held on campus at 43rd Street and Woodland Avenue.  Below is a list of dates and times:

Monday, April 8

2-4 p.m. 

Performance by Harold E. Smith, of Germantown, Pa.
Harold E. Smith plays the didgeridoo of the Australian Aborigines, as well as the conch shell, bells, gongs, drums and various instruments native to Africa.  

 

5:30-6:30 p.m.   

Performance by George Ruckert, MA, PhD
Dr. Ruckert, Misher Week's guest lecturer, is a senior lecturer in music at MIT.

 

Tuesday, April 9

11a.m.-Noon      

Performance by Akhila Vasthare
Akhila Vasthare is an Indian dancer.

 

Noon-1 p.m.      

Performance by Princess Hawa Moore
Princess Hawa Moore is an African singer who will be accompanied by drummers and dancers.

 

2-4 p.m.                        

Performance by Taikoza (Japanese Drums)
Taikoza is a Japanese taiko drum group that uses the powerful rhythms of the taiko drums, as well as the shakuhachi, the fue, and the koto.

 

Wednesday, April 10

11 a.m.-noon.       

Performance by Palani Kumar
Palani Kumar is an Indian drummer who will play a type of drum called the mrudangam.

 

2-4 p.m.              

Performance by Darbari
Darbari is an Indian classical music ensemble.

 

5-6 p.m.              

Lecture by George Ruckert
Title: "World Music in the 21st Century."

6-7 p.m.

The KlezMs are a Klezmer Ensemble.

Title:  "History of the Blues"
Dennis Donnelly is a songwriter and recording artist of the blues.

 

Friday, April 12

Performance by Chamoren Yin
Chamoren Yin is a Cambodian dancer.

 

Noon-2 p.m.         

Performance by the Katari (Peruvian) Ensemble
The Katari Ensemble play traditional Andean folk music, with the folkloric instruments of Bolivia, Peru, Chile, and Ecuador: panflutes, kena flutes, charango and guitars.
