USP
To Bestow Honorary Degrees On Two Prominent Science Leaders at 180th
Commencement
University
of the Sciences in Philadelphia (USP) will present honorary degrees to
two prominent leaders in the science community as part of USP's 180th
Commencement celebration, which will be held Monday, May 21, 2 p.m., at
the Academy of Music, Broad and Locust streets.
Michael R. Cohen, president of the Institute
for Safe Medication Practices, and Dr. Shirley M. Malcom, head of the
Directorate for Education and Human Resources at the American Association
for the Advancement of Science, will be acknowledged for their respective
contributions to the areas of health and science.
Cohen is being recognized for his distinguished career in
pharmaceutical care and education,
and outstanding leadership in the development of safe medication practices.
Dr. Malcom is being recognized for her significant accomplishments
as a scientist and educator,
and for innovative leadership in promoting awareness and access for careers
in science and technology.
Michael
R. Cohen
Michael
Cohen is the president of The Institute for Safe Medical Practices. His
major interests are assisting health professionals, hospitals, industry
and regulatory agencies in the development of safe medication practices.
He has also been instrumental in the implementation and development
of medication error reporting programs in Australia, Canada, Hong Kong,
Israel, Spain, and the United Kingdom.
He has written several books, including Medication Error, Medication
Errors: Causes and Prevention, and 200 Medication Errors and How to Avoid
Them. Cohen has authored
more than 100 publications including monthly columns in Hospital Pharmacy,
Nursing 2000, Pharmacy Today, IV Newsline, ASHP Newsletter, International
Pharmaceutical Journal, and acts as the editor of ISMP Medication Safety
Alert.
In
addition to his work at the Institute, Cohen serves as an adjunct associate
professor of pharmacy at Temple University, an assistant editor of Hospital
Pharmacy, and the national chairman of Accelerated Learning Workshops
on Adverse Drug Events.
He
was named as one of top 50 most influential pharmacists in U.S.
He holds a B.S. degree and M.S. degree in pharmacy from Temple
University School of Pharmacy and Hospital Pharmacy Administration.

Shirley
M .Malcom
Dr.
Shirley M. Malcom is the head of the Directorate for Education and Human
Resources (EHR) Programs at the American Association for the Advancement
of Science (AAAS). The directorate includes AAAS programs in education, activities
for underrepresented groups, and public understanding of science and technology.
Dr. Malcom was head of the AAAS Office of Opportunities in Science
from 1979 to 1989. Between
1977 and 1979, she served as program officer in the Science Education
Directorate of the National Science Foundation (NSF).
Prior to this, she held the rank of assistant professor of biology,
University of North Carolina, Wilmington.
Other work experience includes two years as a high school science
teacher.
Dr.
Malcom received her doctorate in ecology from The Pennsylvania State University;
master's degree in zoology from the University of California, Los Angeles;
and a bachelor's degree with distinction in zoology from the University
of Washington. In addition,
she holds seven honorary degrees.
She serves on several boards, including the American Museum of
Natural History, Carnegie Corporation of New York, and National Center
on Education and the Economy. She
serves as a trustee of Adelphi University and as a Regent of Morgan State
University. In addition,
she has chaired a number of national committees addressing education reform
and access to scientific and technical education, careers, and literacy.
In 1995 Dr. Malcom was elected a fellow of the American Academy
of Arts and Sciences. She
served as a member of the National Science Board and is currently on the
President's Committee of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST).
