Teaching Can
Be Improved With Innovations
Whether its using the
Internet or emphasizing collaborative learning, teachers
are formulating innovative teaching methods to help students
learn better. The Teaching and Learning Center of University
of the Sciences in Philadelphia has compiled a document
of educational innovations that aim to improve teaching
and learning. Professors from various disciplines have contributed
their innovative teaching methods that they believe help
create constructive learning. Some of the innovative methods
include students: developing a portfolio of competencies
that can be used in a job interview, surfing the
Web to assess zoology Internet sites, getting involved with
a community group to apply what they learned in the classroom,
analyzing historical trends and contemporary influences
on professional practice and becoming teachers themselves
by evaluating their classmates on research presentations.
Dr. Phyllis Blumberg, director
of the Teaching and Learning Center, believes that this
compilation and wide dissemination of a document
of teaching innovations will give increased recognition
to individual faculty who strive to improve their teaching.
"This document should also assist others in trying
new methods in their teaching, and thus improve student
learning," said Dr. Blumberg. "As a result of
the dissemination of the document, other faculty have begun
to collaborate on new ideas and try the innovations."
