University of the Sciences in Philadelphia Bestows Annual Alumni Awards

University of the Sciences in Philadelphia recently held its Annual Alumni Reunion and Dinner Dance. During the event, USP presented alumni awards to six deserving recipients.

 

Annual Alumni Award

  • Dr. Deborah H. Cook

The Annual Alumni Award is bestowed on an alumnus who is distinguished through contributions in outstanding fashion to a profession, science and/or mankind.

Dr. Cook is the principal investigator and project director of the New Jersey Statewide Systematic Initiative, based at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. She was part of the leadership team that coordinated the development of the New Jersey Science Curriculum Framework, which provided learning demonstration activities for each of the New Jersey Science Curriculum Standards and described essential components of a quality K-12 science program. Her experience also includes serving as a Fulbright Exchange Teacher to the United Kingdom and teaching and supervising mathematics and science in various New Jersey and Pennsylvania schools. In 1983, she was named Dreyfus Master Teacher.

Dr. Cook received a B.S. in chemistry at Philadelphia College of Pharmacy (now USP).

 

Ivor Griffith Service Award

  • Arthur M. Blatman

The Ivor Griffith Service Award is bestowed annually upon an alumnus who is distinguished through voluntarily giving his/her time and service in outstanding fashion to the University either directly or through participation in the USP Alumni Association.

Blatman is a third generation pharmacist. Both his parents are previous recipients of the Ivor Griffith Service Award. He currently is employed by Eckerd Drugs in Warrington. He has been an active member of the USP Alumni Association since 1979, including two years in which he served as president.

He received a B.S. in pharmacy at Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science (now USP).

 

Young Alumnus Award

  • Rosemarie O’Malley Halt

The Young Alumnus Award is bestowed annually on an alumnus who has received a degree within the last 15 years and has been distinguished through contributions in outstanding fashion to his/her profession, science and/or mankind.

Halt has worked as a registered pharmacist since 1989 as a staff pharmacist and pharmacy manager for CVS Pharmacy until 1996, and currently as a part-time pharmacist for Murray Overhill Pharmacy in Media. She also serves as secretary of the Delaware County Pharmacists Association and as southeast regional alternate director of the Academy of Community Pharmacists. Halt, who received a B.S. in pharmacy at Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science (now USP) has served on the Board of Directors of USP’s Alumni Association since 1989.

 

Honorary Alumnus Award

  • Roland Morris, Esq.

The Honorary Alumnus Award is bestowed annually upon a non-alumnus who has shown exemplary dedication and commitment to the mission of the USP.

Morris is a partner in Duane, Morris & Heckscher LLP since 1965, serving as vice chairman, chairman and managing partner of the firm, directing its growth from a regional law firm to one of international renown. He has been a frequent speaker at conferences sponsored by healthcare, legal and cultural organizations. Among his numerous civic activities, he has served on the Boards of the Big Brother Association of Philadelphia, United Way, Philadelphia Urban Coalition, Legal aid Society of Philadelphia and Magee rehabilitation. Morris has also has served on USP’s Board of Trustees for the past 30 years.

 

Athletic Hall of Fame Awards

  • Elaine S. Anderson

Induction into the Athletic Hall of Fame is an honor bestowed upon an individual who has demonstrated outstanding career accomplishments, leadership and commitment to his/her sport.

Anderson was a varsity letter winner in three sports. In softball, she had a lifetime .500 batting average, started in every game during her career and was named captain during her senior year. She was named to the PAIAW all-star and the NAIA all-district teams twice. She was on the varsity tennis team, serving as captain her senior year. She also was co-captain of the basketball team, which she led in assists. Since 1989, she has been a women’s high school basketball official.

Anderson is an out-patient physical therapy director at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Passavant. In 1995, she received American Physical Therapy Association certification as an orthopedic specialist.

She received a master’s degree in physical therapy from Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science (now USP).

 

  • Michael R. Hoy

Dr. Hoy was a varsity letter winner in three sports. He played four consecutive years on the men’s baseball team and was captain his senior year. He was a lifetime .400 average hitter and led the squad in wins, strikeouts and Earned Run Average as a pitcher during his last two seasons. He was an All-District NAIA for two years. He received his one-year letter in golf, where he ranked second best in scoring average, and he received his four-year letter in rifle, in which he still is listed in the top-50 in all-time average and total points listing in team history.

Dr. Hoy is employed with Johnson & Johnson’s McNeil Consumer Healthcare in Fort Washington, Pa., where he is director of business development with responsibility for licensing and acquisition of new products and technology.

He received a B.S. in pharmacy and a Ph.D. in pharmaceutics at Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science (now USP).
