Shoveling Snow A Sport?
Shoveling snow may not be an Olympic event, but it should be treated as a sport. Before individuals play baseball or football, they know it is important to prepare their bodies with some type of warm-up exercise, such as stretching, before they take the field. Their muscles need to be properly prepared prior to performing such rigorous activity. Many of these same individuals probably wouldn't warm-up in the same way for shoveling snow from their sidewalks and driveways but they should, says Michael Johnson, PT, MS, OCS, assistant professor of physical therapy at University of the Sciences in Philadelphia. Medical Errors - Who's Responsible?
Did you know that more people are at risk of dying from a medical error than a fatal highway accident, breast cancer or even AIDS? Last year, a report from the National Academy of Sciences' Institute of Medicine (IOM) estimated that between 44,000 and 98,000 patients die annually from medical mistakes. So who is responsible? University of the Sciences in Philadelphia Student Receives President's Award From Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity
The fraternity of Phi Kappa Psi has announced that Paul Sanborn of Philadelphia, Pa., is the recipient of the President's Award along with a $2,500 scholarship given to only one member of the national organization, which boasts thousands of constituents across the country. Sanborn, a health psychology student at University of the Sciences in Philadelphia, is currently the president of the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity on USP's campus. The president of the national organization recently presented Sanborn with the award based on his "proven potential and leadership ability." More...

University Of The Sciences In Philadelphia Dedicates Misher College Of Arts And Sciences
University of the Sciences in Philadelphia recently dedicated and renamed its College of Arts and Sciences in honor of its former president, Dr. Allen Misher. The Misher College of Arts and Sciences will reflect Dr. Misher's many contributions to USP, which included enhancing the school's general education and expanding the role of the humanities and social sciences in a science-based curriculum. USP also announced that it will host an annual lecture series to continue the legacy of Dr. Misher. On Wednesday, October 25, U.S. Poet Laureate Robert Pinsky came to USP's campus as the first Misher Visiting Professor of the Humanities. Depression Shouldn't Be Taken Lightly
Did you know that severe depression is the second most common mental illness seen in adults, affecting more than twice as many women than men? October is Depression Education Month, which aims to educate the public on the seriousness of this disorder. An estimated 20 million Americans suffer from depression each year. But how should people differentiate normal sadness from severe depression? According to Dr. Laura Mandos, associate professor of clinical pharmacy at University of the Sciences in Philadelphia, recognizing the signs of severe depression is extremely important in treating this disease. Take a Hand, Take a Walk During Physical Therapy Month
The month of October is Physical Therapy Month and Dr. Barbara Bourbon, associate professor of physical therapy and director of the physical therapy graduate program at USP, suggests that younger individuals might consider accompanying an elderly family member or friend in their community for short walks two or three times a week. According to Dr. Bourbon, this token of companionship during the month will have a reciprocal effect - it boosts an elderly person's spirits, while giving a younger person a feeling that he or she is making a positive difference in the community. Free Advice From Your Pharmacist Can Be Priceless
Since the mid-1970s, 77 prescription medicines, including 34 in the 1990s alone, have switched to over-the-counter (OTC) status, but are consumers aware of the potential risks sometimes associated with these medicines? If they don't, they need only ask their local pharmacist. October 22-28 is National Pharmacy Week and, according to Dr. Daniel Hussar, Remington Professor of Pharmacy at the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy at University of the Sciences in Philadelphia, consumers need to consult their local pharmacists when selecting OTC medicines. University of the Sciences in Philadelphia Names New Member of The Board of Trustees
Alan J. Milbauer of Wilmington, Del., has recently been elected to serve as a member of University of the Sciences in Philadelphia's Board of Trustees. The responsibilities of the 23-member Board include approving the University's strategic plans and insuring their consistency with the institution's missions and goals. In addition to meeting four times a year, members of the Board of Trustees provide oversight and guidance to the administration in all areas of University operations and participate in various ad hoc committees at the University to their service on the various Board committees. University of the Sciences in Philadelphia Introduces Graduate and Undergraduate Programs in Bioinformatics
University of the Sciences in Philadelphia (USP) received approval to offer a curriculum in bioinformatics leading to Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees. USP admitted the first graduate students to its new bioinformatics program earlier this month, and expects to admit its first undergraduates in bioinformatics in 2001.  More...

Pennsylvania Pharmacists Association names University of the Sciences in Philadelphia Professor Pharmacist of the Year
The Pennsylvania Pharmacists Association recently named Dr. Daniel Hussar as "Pharmacist of the Year." Dr. Hussar is the Remington professor of pharmacy at the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy at University of the Sciences in Philadelphia (USP). University of the Sciences in Philadelphia Receives Grant From W.W. Smith Charitable Trust
University of the Sciences in Philadelphia recently received a grant in the amount of $73,000 from the W.W. Smith Charitable Trust. The grant will be used for W.W. Smith Charitable Trust scholarships, awarded to worthy full-time students, based on financial need and good academic standing. It is the most significant source of private aid to students at USP. University of the Sciences in Philadelphia has recently announced the elections of Delbert S. Payne as chairman and Marvin Samson as vice chairman of The Board of Trustees. The responsibilities of the 23-member Board include approving the University's strategic plans and insuring their consistency with the institution's missions and goals. USP Student Takes On Leadership Role During Occupational Therapy Meeting In Seattle
Kimberly A. Koschineg assumed a challenging leadership role at the recent American Student Committee of the Occupational Therapy Association (ASCOTA) Delegate Meetings in Seattle, Wash. Koschineg, a fifth-year occupational therapy major at University of the Sciences in Philadelphia (USP) was chosen as the facilitator for the Issues in Education Task Force. She will be responsible for meeting the objectives set by the task force and relaying the information from the delegate meeting to USP.  More...

As part of its Commencement ceremonies, University of the Sciences in Philadelphia will bestow honorary degrees to two health leaders, Raymond V. Gilmartin and M. USP Helping Grade School Teachers To Teach Science To Students in a Creative and Fun Manner
If science is taught through amusing and interesting activities such as making ice cream in baggies to teach physical change, then grade school students will be excited to learn about the world of science. This is the belief of a program called OPPS (Operation Primary Physical Science). The program is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and organized by Louisiana State University, which developed the materials and trained 36 national teams. On May 12 and 13, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., the Philadelphia team will host 20 kindergarten through fourth-grade teachers during an educational workshop at University of the Sciences in Philadelphia (USP), located at 600 South 43rd Street.  More...

Alpha Lambda Delta Honors its Freshman Professor of the Year
The University of the Sciences in Philadelphia (USP) chapter of Alpha Lambda Delta recently honored Dr. Catherine M. Bentzley as its Freshman Professor of the Year. Alpha Lambda Delta is a national academic honor society for freshmen. Founded at the University of Illinois in 1924, Alpha Lambda Delta has over 220 chapters across the United States and has initiated over 575,000 students.  More...

Middle School Students and Teachers GEARing Up About Science at University of the Sciences in Philadelphia
University of the Sciences in Philadelphia (USP) takes pride in its mission to make a positive influence in its surrounding community. A new national education program called GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) is an example of USP's commitment to students and teachers within the West Philadlephia and University City Clusters. On Thursday, April 27, at 1:30 p.m., USP will welcome 10 middle school teachers to its campus at 43rd Street and Woodland Avenue to take part in a teacher development workshop that will help them to better educate their students on science.  More...

University of the Sciences in Philadelphia Receives Innovative Program Grant Award
The Pennsylvania Department of Education recently announced that University of the Sciences in Philadelphia has received an Act 101 Innovative Program Grant Award. The $5,700 grant will be used to educate a select number of incoming freshmen on the benefits of preserving the environment on campus and in their respective hometowns. The students will learn the importance of maintaining the environment so they can, in turn, educate their families, community and fellow classmates. More...

University of the Sciences in Philadelphia Hosts International Health Experts
Several prominent international health experts will speak at the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia this spring. Talks will explore issues such as third-world health, corporate philanthropy and American outreach efforts. The series is sponsored by the school's health policy program for students and the general public. On March 1, Karen Lewis of the World Health Organization will speak on international prevention and control of tobacco use. Other speakers include Dr. Juan Antonio Casas, director of health and human development for the Pan American Health Organization, Denise Davis of the American Friends Service Committee, Ron Corey of Pharmacia & Upjohn, and Frances Barnett of the Organization of the Eastern Caribbean States.  More...

University of the Sciences in Philadelphia Names New Dean of the College of Health Sciences
Ruth L. Schemm, Ed.D., OTR/L, was recently appointed dean of the College of Health Sciences at University of the Sciences in Philadelphia. She is one of only a few occupational therapy educators in the country to achieve the level of dean. Dr. Schemm will oversee the departments of occupational therapy, physical therapy, physician assistant studies and medical technology. More...

University of the Sciences in Philadelphia has recently named its Physical Therapy building in honor of Abraham Glasser, '43, a successful business leader and member of USP's Board of Trustees. Glasser Hall, located at 4512 Woodland Avenue, houses physical therapy classrooms, laboratories, research facilities and faculty and staff offices. Glasser and his wife, Gloria, live in Boca Raton, Fla., and reside in Greensburg, Pa., during the summer.  More...
