- Shoveling
Snow A Sport?
- Shoveling snow
may not be an Olympic event, but it should be treated
as a sport. Before individuals play baseball or
football, they know it is important to prepare their
bodies with some type of warm-up exercise, such
as stretching, before they take the field. Their
muscles need to be properly prepared prior to performing
such rigorous activity. Many of these same individuals
probably wouldn't warm-up in the same way for shoveling
snow from their sidewalks and driveways but they
should, says Michael Johnson, PT, MS, OCS, assistant
professor of physical therapy at University of the
Sciences in Philadelphia. More...

AIDS? Last year, a report from the National Academy

that between 44,000 and 98,000 patients die annually
from medical mistakes. So who is responsible? According
to Dr. Eric Wittbrodt, assistant professor of clinical
pharmacy at University of the Sciences in Philadelphia,
many parties contribute to the problem, from physicians
to patients. More...

- Take
a Hand, Take a Walk During Physical Therapy Month
- The month of October
is Physical Therapy Month and Dr. Barbara Bourbon,
associate professor of physical therapy and director
of the physical therapy graduate program at USP,
suggests that younger individuals might consider
accompanying an elderly family member or friend
in their community for short walks two or three
times a week. According to Dr. Bourbon, this token
of companionship during the month will have a reciprocal
effect - it boosts an elderly person's spirits,
while giving a younger person a feeling that he
