Student Counseling Services

Training Program for graduate students in mental health fields

We currently have 3 trainees who work with us during the academic year (September through May, with extension into summer possible with prior approval) completing their clinical practicum. Trainees typically spend 2-3 days on site during regular office hours (9-5) providing individual counseling to our student population under the supervision of one of the professional staff members.

Responsibilities:

  • Individual counseling sessions (with audio taping of all sessions)
  • Intake evaluations (after observing senior staff and then being observed)
  • Crisis Consultation
  • Writing timely progress notes and other paperwork
  • Leading outreach/ educational groups (Date Rape prevention workshops, stress management workshops, etc.)
  • Participating in case conferences
  • Weekly individual supervision
  • Weekly group supervision
  • Additional opportunities for program development and or applied research (as needed/ interest arrises)

Trainees are required to participate in weekly case conference meetings which take place on Fridays from 2-4 (regardless of the days they are scheduled to work). These meetings are an opportunity to be trained as a group on important procedures and practices at this site, and then shift into more formal case presentations and topical discussions relevant to clinical work. This serves as an opportunity for group supervision and to benefit from the multiple perspectives of both permanent staff and peers.

Applications are accepted beginning in December, with considerations made in January and February, interviews scheduled in March, and decisions made as soon as possible in April and May.

To apply please send an email with cover letter of interest and CV attached to Dr. Karen Levinson, Assistant Director of Counseling and Coordinator of Graduate Training, at k.levins@usp.edu.
