The University of the Sciences in Philadelphia complies with all
Federal and State regulations and laws regarding safety and security
for institutions of higher education.
The University of the Sciences has one campus, which is located
at 600 S. 43rd St., Philadelphia, Pa 19104-4495.
The Pennsylvania law (Act 73) is known as, "College and University
Security Information Act". This Act requires disclosures of
crime statistics and security measures, which are detailed throughout
this web site. The following information is also required:
- 2466 undergraduate and 340 graduate students are enrolled.
- 650 undergraduate and 2 graduate students living in student
housing.
- 588 non student employees working on campus.
The Philadelphia Police Department, University of Pennsylvania
Police Department and the Department of Public Safety and Security
have a good working relationship. Each Department is a member of
the University City Public Safety Group, which meets once a month
to discuss crime and other problems in the University City area.
The University receives periodic reports of area crime from the
18th police district, and on occasions police officers come to campus
to address students on various crime and safety matters. Both police
departments provide services to our students, faculty and staff
who live in the University City area, and information about criminal
activity that might impact our University. The University of the
Sciences in Philadelphia participates in a shared radio frequency,
which enables us to communicate with police and other institutions
in the University City area.
The working relationship between the Pennsylvania State Police
and the University is limited to an annual report submitted by the
University to the State Police for inclusion in the publication
titled, "Crime in Pennsylvania". The University complies
with all applicable State laws and regulations dealing with security
at institutions of higher education. The Director of Public Safety
and Security or the Associate Director are the designated campus
officials for receiving and resolving complaints, regarding State
regulations. They can be contacted at 215-895-1116 or 215-596-8595
during normal business hours. Upon resolution of the complaint,
the complaining party can contact the Office of the Attorney General
provided they believe the law is still be violated. The University
will provide the address of the Attorney General's office.
The Campus Sex Crimes Prevention Act (CSCPA) of 2000 provides for
the tracking of convicted sex offenders enrolled at, or employed
by, institutions of higher learning. The CSCPA is an amendment to
the Jacob Wetterling Crimes Against Children and Sexually Violent
Offenders Act. The Federal law requires the State of Pennsylvania
to notify the Philadelphia Police Department when a registered sex
offender attends or is employed (full, part time, vocation or non
paying position) at our University. The Philadelphia Police Department
will provide the name(s) of the registered sex offenders to the
Department of Public Safety.
This Act does not obligate the University to request information
about registered sex offenders. Any member of our community seeking
information under this Act should contact the Philadelphia Police
Department’s Special Victims Unit, which is located at Front
and Lehigh Ave., (215) 685-1180, 1181, 1182.
In addition, a list of all registered sex offenders in Pennsylvania
is available from the Pennsylvania State Police at http://www.psp.state.pa.us/psp/site/default.asp
The CSCPA further amends the Family Educational Rights and Privacy
Act of 1974 (FERBA) to clarify that nothing in this Act can prohibit
an educational institution from disclosing information provided
to the institution concerning registered sex offenders.
The Department also publishes a weekly and monthly crime report
via the University’s E-mail system. The weekly and monthly
crime reports are posted outside of the security office along with
an 18th police district weekly crime report. The University of the
Sciences in Philadelphia is located within the 18th police district,
which is located at 55th and Pine St., Phila, Pa 19143.
The Department of Public Safety and Security has an open records
policy. Most records (see exception below) maintained by the department
are available for public inspection by any member of the university
community including prospective students and employees.
Exceptions: Investigative records are
not available for public inspection. The Dean of Students maintains
all sexual assault records. The Dean of Students must approve the
release of information regarding sexual assault investigations.
