Security patrols campus buildings and grounds on a 24-hours, seven days a week basis.

Access to residence halls is monitored at all times when at least one student is in residence. Lobby areas are video tape-recorded 24 hours a day and there is one entrance where persons are permitted to enter and leave a residence hall. Access to residence halls is restricted to residents, their approved guest , staff and faculty. Residents, staff and faculty must have their ID cards swiped before they are admitted to residence halls. The entrances to residence halls are manned by student workers from 7:00 A.M., Monday through Sunday, until relieved by a security officer. A uniformed security officer relieves the student workers at 1:00 A.M., Sunday to Thursday, and at 2:00 A.M., Friday and Saturday. The rear doors to resident halls are alarmed to prevent propping, and limit access. Ground floor residence rooms are provided with protective screening.

Guests must be signed in by a resident of the hall, provide picture identification and adhere to all regulations. A more detailed explanation of visitation regulations can be found in the Residence Life handbook.

Resident Life Assistants and and Resident Assistants live in resident halls and provide 24 hour coverage. Student rooms should be locked at all times even when unoccupied. Residents with automobiles may park in the lots adjoining the resident halls only after purchasing a parking permit from Student Auxiliary Services in Kline Hall. Most importantly, residents are reminded to observe building security procedures, and to notify residence hall staff or Security of any unfamiliar faces or unusual incidents within either their rooms or residence hall.

The Department of Public Safety and Security, in conjunction with Student Affairs, conducts training sessions each summer for students who are working as Resident Assistants and Door Assistants. Topics covered are their responsibilities, crime prevention, general safety tips, procedures for reporting crimes and emergencies to the security department.

Academic and administrative buildings are open to students, faculty, staff, and authorized visitors during normal business hours (Monday-Friday, 7:00 A.M.- 6:00 P.M.) and are locked during non-business hours. Students are permitted access during non business hours provided an appropriate faculty or staff member authorizes their entry. Anyone entering a building during non business hours must show proper Identification.

University policy dictates that all faculty and staff must wear their ID cards at all times while on campus. Security officers will stop individuals who do not have their ID card visible.

Facilities and landscaping are maintained in a manner that minimizes hazardous conditions. USP security regularly patrol the campus and report malfunctioning lights, make daily test of emergency call box phones, and report other unsafe physical conditions (sidewalks/shrubbery) to the Facilities Department for correction. Other University members are helpful when they report unsafe conditions to the Facilities Department at extensions "8955" or "7600", during normal business hours, or the Security Department at extension "7000" at any time.
