ROOF POLICY
| POLICY: | Designed to reduce the risk of exposure to employees/contractors
from fast-acting, highly toxic gases, while working on the roof, i.e.,
those that may have immediate/rapid physiological effect that may render
one helpless. |
| LAB PERSONNEL/FACULTY RESPONSIBILITY: |
| Are responsible for reviewing all chemicals he/she plans to use and for notifying the Safety Officer or the Director of Facilities Services (or designee) by phone, if a chemical or chemical reaction will be highly toxic to the workers on the roof. In the event that the Safety Officer or Director of Facilities Services (or designee) cannot be reached, Security should be notified. | ||||||||||

| The Safety Officer, Director of Facilities Services, or Security will alert any workers on the roof by radio, if they should leave the roof immediately. If there is no response from the workers, Security will search the roof of the appropriate building. | ||||||||||
| PROCEDURE: | LABORATORY BUILDINGS |
| All preventive maintenance or scheduled maintenance on roof exhaust hoods: |
| E-mail notice will be sent 2 weeks in advance by the facilities services department to Laboratory Personnel/Faculty, Safety Officer, Security and posted on front doors and elevators stating when the hood(s) will be shut down. | |
| Hoods to be serviced will be shut down prior to beginning
work. |
| Any emergency maintenance on roof exhaust hoods: |
| Notification by e-mail and/or phone to all Laboratory Personnel/Faculty, Security and the Safety Officer, stating that the hood(s) will be shut down. At least three hours notice will be given in extreme circumstances. 24 hours notice will be given when possible. Any overnight experiments must be registered with Security and posted properly. | Hoods to be serviced will be shut down prior to beginning
work. |
| Scheduled or Emergency roof work (NOT on exhaust hoods): |
| If work on the roof will be approximately 15 minutes or less, use the smoke tube indicator kit to see direction of air flow. If the worker cannot work upwind of the stacks, work will be put off until wind direction changes. | |
| If work on the roof will be longer than 15 minutes, e-mail notice will be sent by facilities services department to Laboratory Personnel/Faculty, Safety Officer, Security and posted on front doors and elevators stating when the hoods will be shut down. Two weeks notice should be given for scheduled roof work. Twenty-four hour notice should be given whenever possible for emergency roof work. | |
| All hoods in the building will be shut down prior to beginning
work or respiratory protection should be used by the workers on the roof.
[There may be times when the hoods do not need to be shut down and respiratory
protection is not needed. Each situation should be evaluated individually.
Consideration will be given to buildings ventilation system, stack height,
distance from stack, wind direction, etc.] |
