Stephen L. Mayo, PhD
Professor of Biology and Chemistry,
California Institute of Technology
Adjunct Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology,
University of Southern California School of Medicine, Los Angeles
Dr. Mayo received a B.S. degree in chemistry from Pennsylvania State University and a Ph.D. degree in chemistry from the California Institute of Technology, where he studied biological electron transfer with Harry Gray. He developed a rule-based molecular mechanics force field as a Miller Fellow at the University of California, Berkeley, and studied hydrogen/deuterium-exchange reactions in proteins as a postdoctoral fellow with Robert Baldwin at Stanford University School of Medicine.
Dr. Mayo's honors include a Rita Allen Foundation Scholar Award, a David and Lucile Packard Foundation Fellowship, a Searle Scholar Award, and the Johnson Foundation Prize for adventurous and innovative research in structural biology. Dr. Mayo is a member of the National Academy of Sciences
