Pharmacology
and Toxicology Curriculum
Part of
the learning process is being able to help fellow students.
Team work is necessary to achieve the best results.
Pharmacology and toxicology rely heavily on a thorough understanding
of a number of basic sciences. The curriculum at USP is designed
to provide a solid foundation in the sciences and a broad
general education drawing upon humanities and the social sciences.
The first two years of the curriculum follow the general guidelines
described in the Core Curriculum.
The third and fourth years of the curriculum
concentrate on developing the knowledge base needed for careers
in pharmacology and toxicology. Students gain practical experience
through a series of "hands-on" laboratory courses
covering some of the specialized techniques used in current
research. Communication is essential in all fields of study,
and at USP, Pharm-Tox students foster their communication
skills by giving seminars to their peers and the faculty during
their third and fourth years.
An additional feature of the Pharmacology and Toxicology Program
is the ability of students to work in faculty
laboratories on research
projects. Students are encouraged to take research
electives that help them understand how science works and
learn techniques that will be useful in their future careers.
