Department of Pharmacy Practice and Pharmacy Administration

FAQs

1. What do I need to do to in order to participate in research involving human subjects?

All investigators who participate in research involving human subjects must undergo training and be approved before any project will be reviewed by the USP IRB. Students who are working with you, and other key personnel, must undergo training, as well. The NIH provides a web-based program that will satisfy the training requirement at USP. Research training that you complete as required by an outside institution may apply. Refer to the USP IRB website for complete information.

2. How do I know whether my project requires approval from the Human Subjects Investigational Review Board?

Certain investigations may be exempt from IRB review. In addition, these regulations only pertain to projects involving human subjects that meet the definition of “research.” The IRB makes this determination. However, you should review these criteria to ensure that your project undergoes appropriate review.

3.  What about research that I plan to conduct in an educational setting?

Certain research conducted in established or commonly accepted educational settings is exempt from IRB review. A decision chart may assist you with this determination. Projects involving surveys on campus assessments of educational outcomes may fall under guidelines that oversee these activities. Contact Dr. Peter Miller for additional information and/or guidance.

4.    Do I need USP IRB approval to conduct research involving human subjects if my project is already approved at an outside institution?

Yes. All research involving human subjects conducted by USP faculty, staff, and students requires review and approval by the USP IRB before it can commence.

5.    Are there funds available to support faculty-mentored student research/scholarship?

Yes. Contact Lisa Davis or Andrew Peterson for additional information about funding sources on campus. In addition, funds are available support presentations involving faculty-mentored student research/scholarship activities. Posters should be printed on campus.
