Biography

Steven L Sheaffer is Associate Professor of Clinical Pharmacy and Vice-Chair for Experiential Learning in the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy at the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia (USP).

Dr. Sheaffer graduated from Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science with his Bachelor of Science degree in 1975 and his Doctor of Pharmacy in 1978. He completed a hospital pharmacy residency in 1976 at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital and Crozer Chester Medical Center.

His practice and teaching interests include medication safety, emergency preparedness and medication use systems including automation, information systems and pharmacy and therapeutics committees / formulary processes. He has lectured on emergency preparedness, professionalism, leadership and management including the impact of professional, accrediting and credentialing organizations for individual practitioners and the profession.

Dr. Sheaffer was presidential officer of the American Society of Health System Pharmacists (ASHP) from 2000 to 2003. He previously served on the ASHP Board of Directors as the Chair of the ASHP House of Delegates, Chaired of the ASHP Research and Education Foundation in 2003-04 and is a past President of the PSHP.

Prior to joining the faculty of USP in 2001, Dr. Sheaffer served as Director of Pharmacy with Mercy Health System of Southeastern Pennsylvania where he was responsible for the pharmacy service at Mercy Fitzgerald and Mercy Community Hospitals. While at Mercy Fitzgerald he initiated a pharmacy practice residency program and established Mercy as a major teaching affiliate for the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy. He currently serves on the Board of Governors of Mercy Hospital of Philadelphia.
