Faculty and staff are invited to read
this book and facilitate a small group discussion with
first year students in September. Copies of Persepolis
II will
be available the week of April 6th at the Academic Advising
Center. Training sessions will be offered for facilitators
between August 10th and 21st, 2009. We hope to have a
wide variety of faculty and staff members from across
the university to facilitate these groups.
First year students will receive a copy of Persepolis
II during the June Orientation program. Again
this year, the Writing Program is partnered with One
Big Book Club. Students will pull from their
reading experience of Persepolis II to complete
the in-class diagnostic writing assessment in EN 101. In
addition, there is an essay contest to help motivate
students to read the book over their summer vacation. When
the freshmen class returns to USP in the fall, we will
devote the first Thursday of classes, September 3rd,
from 1 to 3pm, as discussion time for One Big Book
Club. Each discussion group will be facilitated
by one faculty or staff member and a student leader. Discussion
groups will be organized by orientation sections, rather
than random selection in years past. Look for
monthly events revolved around Persepolis II during
the 2009-2010 academic year. In addition, I hope
that faculty, who teach first year students, will find
ways to incorporate the book into their classes throughout
the year.
Join your friends and colleagues, read Persepolis
II: The Story of a Return, and get involved with
our incoming students! Faculty and staff who
are interested in participating in this program as
a small group facilitator or wish to discuss ways to
integrate this book into your curriculum should contact
Julie Carney at ext.7479 or via email at j.carney@usp.edu by
May 15, 2009.
