One Big Book Club—Essay Contest
How can I win that $500?
You could be one of two students to win $500 when you participate
in an essay contest:
Contest rules: Essays should be no longer
than 1000 words, typed and double-spaced. All essays must be
sent to advising@usp.edu as
a MS Word attachment. All essays must be submitted by Monday,
August 10, 2009 by noon. Winners
will be announced on Welcome Day, Friday, August 28,
2009.
Critical essay: Think of important times in your life
where, like Marjane, you were exposed to challenges and often
painful experiences which forced you to make hard decisions
or choices. In what ways do you think hard decisions or choices
benefit or harm us as individuals? Pick one of these times
and write an essay about it, making sure to cite specific and
detailed examples and being very clear about the positive or
negative influences this experience had on you.
Personal essay: Think of a time in your life when
you have felt the need to change yourself in order to “fit in.” What
were the circumstances? What did you do? How did you feel about
yourself? Do any of these feelings apply to your new situation
at college? Write an essay discussing these points.
