William L. Ashton Named Vice President of Strategic Business Development

William L. Ashton has been named vice president of strategic business development and associate provost at University of the Sciences. Ashton will helm the University’s newly established Office of Strategic Business Development.

Ashton, a former Fortune 100 senior executive with 28 years of experience in pharmaceutical and biotechnology leadership and management, will oversee the advancement of strategic partnerships, business relationships, and academic opportunities for the University. In addition to his dual appointments in the Office of Strategic Business Development, he will continue to be recognized as founding dean of the University’s Mayes College of Healthcare Business and Policy, a title he’s held since June 2009.

Ashton joined University of the Sciences in 2005 as an assistant professor in the Pharmaceutical Marketing and Management Program. Prior to that, he served at Amgen Inc., in Thousand Oaks, Calif. as vice president of sales from 1995 to 2003 and vice president of corporate and government affairs from 2003 to 2005. At Amgen, he was responsible for strategy development and plan of action execution for key government agencies including Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, Office of the Inspector General, General Accounting Office, Office of Management Budget, and MedPAC.

In October 2009, Ashton was appointed to the Sucampo Pharmaceuticals, Inc., board of directors. Ashton is also on the boards of the National Osteoporosis Foundation, Neogenix Oncology, and Friends of the National Library of Medicine (National Institutes of Health), and is a commissioner of the Medical Representatives National Certificate Commission.

Ashton earned a master of arts degree in education from University of Pittsburgh. A native of Brownsville, Pa., he currently resides in Newtown Square, Pa.
