Arts and sciences Go Hand-in-Hand at USP

At USP, we know from experience (nearly 200 years) that a well-rounded individual makes the best health science professional. That's why students in all undergraduate majors take a core curriculum that includes world cultures, economics, history, literature, psychology, sociology, communications, and the fine arts.

No matter which path you take at USP, you’ll need to know how to relate and interact with anyone. Mastering the art of human communication and understanding will give you an edge in the marketplace.

In addition to providing classes for all students, the Misher College of Arts and Sciences offers majors, programs (see below) and minors programs in some of the hottest career areas in the country, as well as programs that offer excellent preparation for medical, graduate, or professional school:

  • Biochemistry: Study the complex structural interactions that occur between biomolecules, including proteins and nucleic acids, as well as the molecular basis of metabolism, reproduction, growth, and heredity.
  • Bioinformatics: Learn how life works from the molecular level to the level of the whole organism, how to manipulate protein and DNA information, and how to design new medicines.
  • Biology: Study the unique adaptations of organisms and how individuals interact with each other and their environment.
  • Chemistry: Study how atoms combine to form complex molecules and learn how to use this knowledge to design new materials that empower lives—from synthetic fibers to modern “miracle drugs.”
  • Computer Science: Master the expanding computer and cybernetic technologies while acquiring a background in the natural sciences and an in-depth knowledge in a life or health science field.
  • Environmental Science: Study the effects of industrialization and other human disturbances on biological, chemical, and geological aspects of the environment.
  • Forensic Science: Our integrated program or minor can help you on your way to a rewarding career in this fascinating field.
  • Humanities and Science: Gain a thorough grounding in the natural sciences in combination with an in-depth study in the various humanities disciplines.
  • Psychology: Learn how to recognize the effects of stress, lifestyle, and personality on people and prevent and treat illness.
  • Microbiology: Study the microscopic forms of life including bacteria, viruses, fungi, protozoa, and algae using specialized tools, and learn of their interactions with humans and other species of life.
  • Pharmaceutical Chemistry: Learn how to produce life-saving and life-changing drugs.
  • Pre-Med Track: With faculty guidance, tailor a program that prepares you for medical, dental, or veterinary school.
  • Science Teacher Certification: Acquire a strong science background that qualifies you for careers in schools, museums, nature centers, and zoos. You can become certified to teach in 42 states in addition to Pennsylvania.

Arts Come Alive at USP

Designed to expand your worldview, the Humanities Department within the Misher College of Arts and Sciences hosts cultural events throughout the year, including:

  • Spring arts explosion featuring a week of comedy, improv, and drama performances; academic lectures by guest professors; faculty and student art exhibits; classical guitar concerts; and the Kingseessing Spring Concert. Dubbed the “Misher Week of Theater,” this event is scheduled for February 21, 2003.
  • Ten-Minute Play Festival featuring plays written, directed, and performed by USP students. This first-time event was held in November 2002.
  • Dean Vastardis, USP’s first visiting sculpture artist. A Temple University graduate, Vastardis installed four of his steel sculptures on the USP Mall for exhibit through April 2003.
  • Malis Lecture presented in October 2002 by Gary Y. Okihiro, professor of international and public affairs and director of the Center for Study of Race and Ethnicity at Columbia University. Okihiro spoke on “Asians and Africans in America.”
