Do you have multiple academic and professional interests? Do you want to explore the natural, social, and health sciences in depth? Would you like to help people through community service? Would you like to develop your talents in science, research, and writing? If so, the B.S. in Health Science program at USP has been designed with you in mind.

Why USP?

The Health Science program combines a strong foundation in the natural and social sciences with concentrated studies applying these principles to the health sciences. At USP, you have the unique opportunity to:

  • Study concepts of health and wellness and explore your interests while earning a marketable degree.
  • Establish an individualized curriculum focused on a particular area of health science. While a portion of the curriculum for the Bachelor of Science in Health Science is based on required courses, you have the opportunity to tailor a program that fits your career goals.
  • Complete your teacher certification while earning your B.S. in Health Science, if you choose to pursue this option.
  • Learn about different majors during your first year.
  • Apply your knowledge to meet real needs through fieldwork and/or service learning.
Your Life in Health Science

Upon completion of the Health Science program, you can obtain employment as members of the administrative staff in settings such as:

  • Hospitals and health care system clinics
  • Medical offices
  • Health maintenance organizations
  • Community health programs

You will be prepared to pursue employment in positions such as:

  • Case management
  • Activities director
  • Research assistant
  • Health educator
  • Health-related product sales
  • Community Reenter Trainer

You'll also be prepared to continue your studies in a wide range of graduate educational curricula, including USP's M.S. and Ph.D. in Health Policy, M.S. in Biomedical Writing, and M.B.A. in Pharmaceutical Business programs.

Your Future in Health Science

The aging of America, advances in technology, and a growing public awareness about the importance of good health create a climate rich in opportunity for students in the health science program, particularly in the areas of public health, community health, and medical research. Employers request our graduates because they know they are well educated and experienced.

Hands-on Learning

You'll gain practical experience through classroom experiences. In addition, you'll expand your knowledge through service learning projects, which combine classroom learning with hands-on application. USP has developed partnerships with local organizations that offer community service opportunities to students. Through fieldwork, you will gain community-based educational experience related to an area of health study. This may include community-based service learning or clinical education opportunities.

Research is also encouraged, and you can develop new ideas and applications in your chosen profession. Students are supported to present their research findings at national, regional, and local professional meetings.

Learn from the Best

You'll have access to faculty across the University for both teaching and mentoring. Faculty within the College of Health Sciences and the Misher College of Arts and Sciences are available to share their professional experiences with you.

The Curriculum

You will take foundational courses which include University core curriculum requirements and additional courses in the natural and/or social sciences, research, or related courses. You will also take health science courses that relate to normal and abnormal development, structure, and function and health care delivery, or that facilitate the development of the health science competencies.

While a portion of the curriculum is based on these required courses, you are given the ability to establish, under the guidance of an academic advisor, an individualized curriculum focused in an area of health science. You will take specific courses related to an area of interest that prepare your for future employment or further education. Sample areas of concentration include business management, computer science/bioinformatics, health science research, community health/public policy, and teacher certification in general science. You will take a total of 120 credits of course work.

Through the Health Sciences program, you will learn how to:
