How to Find Journals
Instructions for searching the A-Z Journal List:
- Enter all or part of the journal title in the search box, and click on 'GO'. Make sure you enter the journal title and not the article title.
- Titles matching your search will be displayed.
- Look for the journal title you need and note whether the title is through full text (online) access and/or if the library has print holdings. This will be indicated if there is a checkbox for that journal under the appropriate column
- Online Journals - To see a journal that is available online, click on its checkmark link under Full Text Access. The link should take you directly to the online journal where you can locate your article. If you are off-campus, you will need a valid username and password to view most online articles. Some online journal articles are not available from off-campus due to vendor or technical barriers.
- Print Holdings - To see which volumes of a journal title the library holds, click on the checkmark link under ‘Print Holdings’. The link will take you to the title’s entry in the library’s catalog. (Sometimes instead of a single entry, a results list will appear. Choose your title from the results list.) Scroll down through the entry to find the location of the journal and the library’s holdings. Most bound and unbound journals are on the library’s second floor.
What to do if you can’t find a particular journal?
- If you need an article from a journal that we do not subscribe to, the J.W. England Library provides interlibrary loan services through ILLiad. Expect to wait up to two weeks for an article requested through ILLiad. The library does not charge for this service. For more information, go to our Interlibrary Loan page.
- Alternatively, you can check with some local libraries to see if they will grant you access to their journal collections. The Philadelphia region has many medical and university libraries. Several of which are located close to USP.
- One of the closest is the University of Pennsylvania’s Biomedical Library at 36th Street and Hamilton Walk. You can search their online catalog here. Visitors with photo ID may use the Biomedical Library from 8 am to 6 pm, Monday through Friday.
- Drexel University’s Hagerty Library (33rd and Market Streets) is open to USP users with identification. Drexel’s catalog is also available online.
- For information about the holdings and access policies of other local libraries, call the Information Desk at 215.596.8967, use Ask-A-Librarian, or contact the other library.
