Faculty Learning Community Activities

The Department of Social Sciences at USP has, since its inception, been involved in learning-centered teaching (student centered learning). The nature of the knowledge base in this academic domain lends itself to student self-discovery,self-assessment, and direct interaction with teachers. Students are directly involved in knowledge base discovery, actively engaged in experiential learning and skills application.

Listed below are a few examples of such activities (some of which may be found in the Teaching and Learning Center's www.usip.edu/teaching

  • "Interteach" learn by teaching; students within a course teach fellow students- Dr. Lambert
  • Individualized student "Behavior Modification" projects, self monitored and fellow student monitored- Dr. Lambert, Dr. Ditunno, P. Sanborn
  • "Hands-on" survey innovation and implementation by students- Dr. Hogan, Dr. Ditunno
  • "Psychological Analysis" of "teen" music-students gathered music which illustrated a topic in class (glorification of teen violence, sex, etc. used to supplement topic discussion)- Dr. Flannery-Schroder
  • "Data Comparisons"- data from self administered questionnaires interpreted and compared to data reported as published patient data- Dr. Ditunno
  • "Autobiographical Memory Project"- students keep journals and analyze recall of detailed information- Dr. Ditunno
  • "Hands-on" experiential learning utilizing laboratory based research: perception, learning, memory, creativity, sleep deprivation, subliminal influence, etc.- Dr. Moelter, Dr. Flannery-Schroeder, Dr. Ditunno, Dr. Lambert
  • "Buddy Critique" having graduate students pair with undergraduates in learning assessment skills- Dr. Moelter
  • "Patient Counseling"- "role playing" communication skills- Professor Leibowitz
  • Anthropological Study of chat rooms-analyze similarities and differences of face-to-face communication with computer mediated communication- Professor Leibowitz
  • "Video" self-assessment of communication and clinical skills- Professor Leibowitz
  • Service Learning at off-campus organizational sites-with class discussion and critical feedback- Dr. Ruane, Dr. Hogan
  • Small group reflection on cultural diversity- Dr. Hogan
  • In-class self-reflection: pairs of students interview each other regarding field visits- exploring expectancy/experience dissonance- Dr. Hogan
  • Community out-reach participation with student attitudinal feedback as well as community health site feedback- Dr. Hogan
