Wireless Access
Overview of Wireless Technology
Wireless networking technology allows specially equipped computers
to access local area networks (LANs) without using wires. This allows
users to browse the web, send and receive email, and transfer files
from up to several hundred feet away from a transmitter.
How to Get Wireless Access
To use wireless internet access on campus, you will need to perform
these steps:
- Get a wireless card - The university is supporting
a wireless - 802.11B and 802.11G network.
This is now offered as a built-in option on newer
laptops. If you do not have this option, you can purchase one at
a local computer store.
- Configure your card - Once you purchase
your card follow the setup directions.
- Find a wireless hot spot on campus.
If you are in an area
with a wireless network, your computer should automatically
locate the network. In Windows, you may get a popup by the system
tray.
If
you're not sure that you're connected to the right network, just double-click
the network icon in the system tray (the icon of the two computers,
as shown above), and select USP from the list.
If you have questions please contact the IT Help Desk for assistance.
Wireless Hotspots
A number of academic buildings and public indoor and outdoor spaces
on campus have wireless access, with more planned in the next few
years. Currently Osol and Goodman Halls have no wireless connectivity.
Student owned wireless access points & routers are not permitted
as they will not function properly and may cause problems for others.
