Tech Tips
Following are some important things to learn, know and practice to
help you keep your USP computer working properly.
- To avoid damaging files, always shut down Windows before you turn
off your computer.
- The correct way to shut down your computer in Windows is to click
the "Start" button, click "Shut Down…" and
with "Shut down the computer?" selected click the "Yes" button.
Your screen will display a message when it is safe to turn your computer
off. Never just press the power button on your PC to turn it off because
you will not only lose any unsaved data but could also damage files
necessary to run Windows. Backup all of your important files.
- It is very important to backup your files, especially ones that
can't be replaced. So make it a practice to backup regularly. Don't
load screen savers, games, Internet access software, email software
or any kind of software from the Internet on your USP PC. Any software
not supported by USP or authorized for installation through IT is not
allowed to be installed on any USP PC. Due to possible unknown bugs,
viruses and software/hardware conflicts IT cannot be responsible for
troubleshooting problems related to unsupported software. Not only
is this a waste of our time to troubleshoot these problems, but it
is also a waste of our time to uninstall these kinds of software. Thank
you in advance for your cooperation.
- Set McAfee AntiVirus to clean automatically.
Check your McAfee AntiVirus options to see if viruses are being cleaned automatically
upon detection. Launch VirusScan AntiVirus for Windows and click the "Action" button.
From the pull down menu under "When Virus is Found" select "clean
infected file" and click "OK."
- How to save and share your Microsoft Word files.
Oftentimes, because we as students, faculty and staff may be using different
versions of Microsoft Word software, the need may arise to share a file on disk
with someone who wouldn't normally be able to open it on their earlier version.
To combat this inconvenience a more recent user may save a document in a lower
version via the following method: Click "File," "Save as…" select
the pull down menu from the "Save as type:" dialogue box and select
the software and version you wish to save the document as.
