Literature Minor

The minor in literature allows students the opportunity to develop an appreciation and understanding of literature as well as an ability to read critically while studying at University of the Sciences in Philadelphia. Every discipline, whether in the humanities or sciences, requires an ability to read texts critically. The student of literature is especially practiced in this important skill. After a student's graduation, the ability to read, analyze, and critically evaluate complex texts will be a key to professional growth in whatever career the student has chosen. Moreover, an appreciation and understanding of literature allow graduates a lifetime of enjoyment and continued intellectual growth as they continue to read the best writing from around the world.

Eligibility

  • A student may apply for the minor at the end of his or her first year of study.
  • A student must must have earned a grade of at least a B in EN 101 and EN 102, or must have the permission of the minor advisor.
  • A student must have a 2.0 GPA or higher and must have approval of his/her advisor in order to apply for the program.

Prerequisite courses

  • EN 101 - College Composition (3 credits) (or its equivalent at another institution)
  • EN 102 - Introduction to Literature (3 credits) (or its equivalent at another institution)

Requirements - 18 credit hours

  • Students may not count any course toward a literature minor that is also being used for another minor (that is, no "double dipping").
  • Any literature course at the 300 level may count toward the minor in literature.
    • EN 323 - Fantasy Literature (3 credits)
    • EN 324 - Asian American Autobiography (3 credits)
    • WC/HU 313 - Don Quijote and Other Spanish Anti-Heroes (3 credits)
    • EN 309 - American Fiction to 1900 (3 credits)
    • EN 310 - The Novel (3 credits)
    • EN 311 - Twentieth-Century American Fiction (3 credits)
    • EN 312 - Modern Drama and Theatre (3 credits)
    • EN 313 - Twentieth-Century British Literature (3 credits)
    • EN 314 - The Short Story (3 credits)
    • EN 315 - The Self in Prose: Autobiography and Autobiographical Fiction (3 credits)
    • EN 317 - Women in Literature (3 credits)
    • EN 318 - Major American Writers (3 credits)
    • EN 319 - Tragical, Comical, Historical, Pastoral: A Survey of Shakespearean Drama (3 credits)
    • EN 320 - Popular Fiction in America (3 credits)
    • EN 321 - Science Fiction Literature (3 credits)
    • EN 325 - Asian-American Literature (3 credits)
    • EN 326 - Literature and Medicine (3 credits)
  • A student may also take the following courses with the approval of his or her minor advisor:
    • HU 340 - Special Topics in the Humanities (3 credits)
    • HU 399 - Independent Study (3 credits)
    • HU 498 - Directed Study in the Humanities (3 credits)
  • A student may also take one of the following courses:
    • EN 303 - Creative Writing: Playwriting (3 credits)
    • EN 304 - Creative Writing: Fiction (3 credits)
    • EN 306 - Creative Writing: Poetry (3 credits)

Additional Information

  • No more than six credits may be transferred from another institution. The minor advisor will determine whether credits are transferable.
  • As additional literature courses are added by the department of Humanities, these courses will be added to the list of courses a student may use for the minor in literature.
