Routine Medical Evaluation and Treatment |
|
Students
coming to the Student Health Office who are ill or injured are
examined by the physician or nurse. Complete physical exams for
places of employment, clinical rotations, volunteer positions,
etc. are not done in the Student Health Office.
Allergy
injections are given by the nurse during the hours the physician
is present. Students who receive allergy injections must bring
their own allergy serum, properly labeled vials and a complete
set of instructions from their Allergist. Students must remain
in the waiting room for 20 minutes after receiving their injections
and be checked by the nurse before leaving the Student Health Office.
Emergency care within scope of Office Facilities |
|
Minor
emergencies are treated in the Student Health Office. Students with more
serious injuries, such as lacerations that require sutures, possible
fractures, etc. are transported to the University of Pennsylvania
Emergency Room for evaluation and treatment.
Health Related Consultations |
|
Students
may consult with the physician or nurse concerning any health related
issue or problem. Students often come in with questions/concerns
about STD’s, pregnancy, alcohol / drug / tobacco problems,
symptoms a friend or roommate may be having, etc. Sometimes students
come because they have a peculiar problem and they don’t
know who they should see. The physician and nurse may help them
directly or assist the student in seeking help from a more appropriate
source.
All visits and consultations are confidential.
Care of Emotional Problems |
|
The
Student Health Office works in close collaboration with the Counseling
Office when students present with problems that may benefit from
seeing one of the University counselors.
Once again, all visits are confidential.
Students
with special dietary and nutritional concerns or needs may seek
advice from the physician or nurse. Examples of problems that students
may be faced with are diabetes, hypoglycemia, and weight gain or
weight loss.
The
Student Health Office uses the services of Quest Diagnostics. Quest
Diagnostics will directly bill the student’s insurance. Occasionally
students will need the Out Patient Laboratory Services of the University
of Pennsylvania Medical Center. In that event, USP Security will
provide transportation to and from the laboratory.
Referral to Other Medical Facilities |
|
Students
who need services beyond the scope of the Student Health Office will be given
appropriate referrals to other health care facilities as is necessary. These
health care providers will bill the student’s insurance.
Students
who need assistance processing medical insurance claim forms may
contact Mrs. Diane LaBruna in the Student Health Office at 215-596-8980.
During
the hours that the Student Health Office is open, a room is available
for students to lie down for observation by the medical staff.
Generally, this area is utilized for minor problems. More serious
medical problems, such as severe dehydration would require transportation
of the student to the emergency room.
The Student
Health Office keeps a large supply of health related pamphlets
and brochures. These are available to students free of charge.
Pamphlets include such topics as STD info, Safer Sex, Mono, Hepatitis,
Nutrition, Exercise, etc.
