First USP Scholarly
Day
The first USP Scholarly Day in April 2003, sponsored by the Johnson
& Johnson Family of Companies, recognized the value of research-based
scholarly activity to the University. Charles P. O'Brien, MD, PhD,
opened the Scholarly Day by delivering the Sixteenth Annual John
C. Krantz, Jr., Distinguished Lecture entitled, "Developing
New Medications for the Treatment of Addictive Disorders."
First USP Pre-College
Leadership Institute
Fourteen enthusiastic high school seniors participated in USP's
first annual Health and Science Pre-College Leadership Program July
20-24. Thanks to a generous grant from The Dolfinger-McMahon Foundation,
the program's intense, interactive curriculum introduced the students
to the impact of the health sciences and the value of leadership
skills and also provided opportunities to meet with scientists and
researchers.
New Outdoor Classroom/Demonstration
Garden
With funding from the League of Women Voters, Wal-Mart and PA Department
of Environmental Protection, a consortium of local community groups
and the University transformed an eyesore of a vacant neighboring
lot into an attractive garden outdoor classroom space that demonstrates
best practices of watershed management.
W.W. Smith Charitable
Trust Aids USP Scholars
With a major contribution of $70,000 in support of The W.W. Smith
Scholarship Program for 2003-04 and an additional gift of $10,000
to support The W.W. Smith Prize Program, the W.W. Smith Charitable
Trust provided 37 USP students with financial assistance.
USP Health
Policy Symposium
AstraZeneca again supported the USP Health Policy Symposium in 2004
with an unrestricted education grant. The symposium focused on the
future of Medicaid. A stimulating and informative May 2003 symposium
drew more than 200 leading healthcare policymakers, researchers
and pharmaceutical executives.
Arcadia Foundation Supports Life
Science and Technology Building
The Norristown, Pennsylvania-based Arcadia Foundation has awarded
a generous grant to USP's Campaign for An Historic Opportunity
to Shape Our Future. Funds will support the construction
of the new state-of-the-art Life Sciences and Technology Building.
CVS and USP: A Winning Partnership
CVS Charitable Trust has awarded a gift for pharmacy student scholarships,
signifying the company's commitment to higher education and the
educational endeavors of USP.
Wyeth Pharmaceuticals Endows Pharmacy Scholarship as Tribute
to John Wyeth
In a fitting tribute to the memory of John Wyeth, founder of the
Wyeth Pharmaceuticals and Class of 1854 graduate of the Philadelphia
College of Pharmacy (the former USP), Wyeth Pharmaceuticals has
established an endowed scholarship for a fifth-year USP pharmacy
student.
USP
Faculty Member Receives 2003 Lindback Minority Junior Faculty Award
Dr. Deepika Vadher, assistant professor of clinical pharmacy at
USP, was the recipient of a Minority Junior Faculty Award from the
Christian R. and Mary F. Lindback Foundation. The award will support
Dr. Vadher's research to examine the relationship between health
literacy and medication adherence in patients diagnosed as hypertensive
and diabetic.
Barra Foundation Supports Educational Initiatives
This generous grant from the Barra Foundation, Inc.'s Community
Fund will be applied to community outreach and service learning
programs available through USP's Office of Student Affairs.
