HOUGHTON CHAIR of CHEMISTRY & BIOCHEMISTRY

The Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry at University of the Sciences in Philadelphia (USP) is seeking applications for a new, endowed-chair position, entitled the “Houghton Chair of Chemistry & Biochemistry”. The Houghton Chair, the result of a generous bequest from Mr. R. Everett Houghton, is dedicated to the support of a senior scientist, with a background in any of the chemical sciences, whose primary employment has been in the chemical, biochemical, or pharmaceutical industries, or in one of the national scientific laboratories, and who wants to transition to an academic environment in order to pursue an active research interest that may not be fully supported in their current environment.

Applicants for the Houghton Chair should have an extensive record of scientific accomplishment appropriate to the rank of full professor, and an active research interest in one of the chemical sciences. Applicants whose research interests are synergistic with the interests of the Department faculty and which lie at the academic-industrial interface are particularly encouraged to apply. The initial appointment to the Houghton Chair position is normally for a period of three (3) years, with an option to extend the appointment upon approval by both parties. Start-up funds provided, and funds generated annually by the Houghton bequest, may be designated by the Houghton Chair in any manner consistent with support of the research activities of interest, including the salary of research personnel, purchase of equipment and supplies, and travel.

The individual selected for the Houghton Chair is expected to carry out the normal duties of a full professor engaged in an active research program in academia, including the presentation and publication of his/her research, the generation of external funding to support that research, and in this case, the expansion of our current relationships with industry and/or the national laboratories. Although teaching is not a requirement of the position, the Houghton Chair will be encouraged to contribute to courses currently being taught, and/or to develop a course based on his/her industrial experience and expertise.

USP is a unique health science university of ~2,600 undergraduate and ~400 graduate students, with undergraduate and graduate programs in the natural and social sciences, pharmacy, and other health related areas, and is an excellent environment for research at the academic-industrial interface. Information about the academic programs offered by the Department, as well as the research interests of the faculty, can be obtained from our website at www.usip.edu/chemistry. General information about the University can be viewed at www.usip.edu.
