One of my principal research areas of interest is in medicinal chemistry,
where the focus is on the design and synthesis of potential new drugs
with antiinflammatory and antimicrobial properties.
A second research area of interest is the synthesis of new molecules
with defined fluorescent properties. Applications include laser dyes,
scintillation fluors, waveshifters, and eye protection. These fluorescent
molecules, in addition to having high quantum yields and good chemical
stability, must be resistant to the exciting light, and in the case
of scintillators used to detect radiation from nuclear process, must
be resistant to free radical production.
However, it should be noted that as a result of my recent appointment
as an Emeritus Professor, effective in Fall 2002, I will not be accepting
any new research students into my laboratory. I will continue to be
available for consultation in my areas of expertise.
