Pre-Med
Although many undergraduate majors at USP provide an excellent
preparation for admission to Medical, Osteopathic and Veterinary
schools, degrees in Biochemistry and Chemistry are particularly
well-suited for students that have an interest in the molecular
basis underlying medicine, or who might have a future interest in
a combined MD/PhD program. Either major will provide
the background material needed for admission to any Medical, Osteopathic
or Veterinary school in the country.
A combined BS/DO degree program is offered in conjunction
with the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (PCOM). Students
interested in this program must meet with the Pre-Professional Advisor,
Dr. Suzanne Murphy, no later
than the second semester of their first year at the University.
Medical schools often place a premium on applicants with degrees
in Biochemistry or Chemistry due to the well-recognized rigor of
the curricula which reflects positively on their ability to succeed
in Medical school.
Also of interest to Pre-Med students at USP is the Pre-Medical Society,
which serves as a campus-wide student organization for students
interested in careers in medicine and related professions. For further
information regarding the Pre-Med program at USP, students should
contact the campus Pre-Med advisor, Dr.
Suzanne Murphy.
