Intermediate Organic Chemistry

Presents several topics at an intermediate level to bridge the gap between second year organic chemistry and literature based courses. Topics include nomenclature, stereochemistty, multistep synthesis, mechanisms, aromaticity and physical influences on reactions. (Prerequisite: CH 202 or CH 212)

Structure-Activity Relationships

Selected classes of medicinal agents are examined, stressing general structures, synthesis, and, in particular, the relationships between structure and pharmacological activity. (Prerequisite: CH 212 and Permission of Instructor)

Chemical Synthesis Laboratory
3 semester credit hours
3 lecture hours
Multi-step syntheses of both inorganic and organic compounds using more advanced techniques such as vacuum distillation and inert atmosphere. Chromatographic separation and characterization techniques are used to purify and identify products.

Characterization of Organic Compounds

Techniques of organic and inorganic synthesis including reaction control, vacuum and fractional distillation, uniform reagent addition, controlled stirring, operation in inert atmosphere, safe handling of toxic or unstable reagents, and chromatographic purification. (Prerequisite: CH 212, CH 214 and CH 362)

Application of principles of thermodynamics, kinetics and quantum chemistry to biochemical systems. (Prerequisite: CH 321)

Computer-Aided Drug Design (CADD)

Introduction to the theory and practice of molecular modeling, especially as applied to the problem of identifying and designing bioactive and therapeutic agents, using specialized software and advanced computer hardware such as workstations and supercomputer clusters. Theory, instrumentation, and practical aspects of analytical and preparative methods of separations, including gas, liquid, and supercritical fluid chromatography, capillary electrophoresis and separation techniques coupled with mass spectrometry. (Prerequisite: CH 361 or Permission of Instructor)

Pharmaceutical Analytical Chemistry

In depth treatment of the principles and practice of analytical chemistry and instrumental methods as applied to drug analysis, pharmaceutical product quality, concentration of drug and metabolites in biological fluids, drug formulation, etc., with an emphasis on HPLC methods. (Prerequisites: CH361 and CH363 or CH364 or permission of instructor)

A practical approach to the application of spectroscopic techniques, such as NMR, UV/Vis, Fluorescence and Circular Dichroism to problems in Biochemistry, Chemistry, Pharmaceutics, Pharmacognosy and Natural Products.

Candidates for the Master of Science degree, specializing in biochemistry, chemistry or pharmacognosy, are required ro complete a research project under the direction of a member of the Department. (Prerequisite: Permission of Department)

Chemical and biochemical topics based on current literature are analyzed and presented orally and in a written precis. Writing, speech, delivery and use of visual aids are critiqued. (Prerequisite: Permission of Department)

Graduate Project

Graduate students will perform a graduate level project under the direction of an advisor. This project may take one of several forms but must include a comprehensive literature search, a written paper and an oral presentation to the graduate faculty of the department.
