Since 1821, University of the Sciences in Philadelphia has been a leader in health sciences education and in medicinal research and development. Recognizing the rapidly expanding scope of educational and research activities pertaining to natural medicines, in December 1999 the University established the Complementary and Alternative Medicines Institute (CAMI) with initial funding from the Bayer Corporation.
CAMI serves as a nexus for the educational and research activities of the University faculty in the broad field of complementary and alternative medicines.
CAMI promotes a multi-disciplinary and focused approach to the exploration of those natural substances directed primarily to the maintenance of human health and well being.
The fundamental goals of USP/CAMI are:
- To advance the knowledge and understanding of those substances generally categorized as complementary and alternative medicines including, but not limited to, dietary and nutritional substances and nutraceuticals.
- To develop educational strategies and conduct programs intended to provide basic and clinical information regarding complementary and alternative medicines to the health professions.
