AIBS Beta Sigma Chapter
An important part of the Biology Department for the students
is the Beta Sigma student chapter of the American Institute of Biological
Sciences, or AIBS. AIBS is a national nonprofit scientific organization
open for membership to individuals interested in the life sciences.
Our student chapter is open to every major of the college.
We are a professional organization, but we have a lot of fun while
performing professional activities organized around ideas furnished
by our membership. Past and planned activities include: seminars
by visiting scientists; trips to museums including the Smithsonian
in Washington, D.C. and the Museum of Natural History in New York,
The Baltimore Aquarium, and weekend natural history outings to the
Brandywine area, Hawk Mountain, and the New Jersey Pinelands.
If you have any questions about AIBS, you can contact Dr. Alison
Mostrom (a.mostro@usip.edu)
in the Department of Biological Sciences.
Pre-medical Society
The Pre-Medical Society of USP was formed during the Fall Semester
of 1989 to bring together students of ALL majors who are considering
a career as a medical professional. The processes of completing
a pre-medical curriculum and applying to appropriate schools can
be at times, confusing and frustrating. One of the goals of the
society is to make the pathway to professional school as smooth
as possible. We do this by acting as a support group which shares
and supplies important information with its members.
The Pre-Medical Society organizes such activities as guest speakers
who appear on campus and tours of the area medical schools such
as PCOM, Thomas Jefferson, Temple and MCO/Hahnemann.
Dr. Suzanne Murphy (s.murphy@usip.edu)
is the advisor for the Pre-Medical Society as well as the pre-professional
advisor for those students interested in applying to professional
schools. Her office is located in Griffith Hall 326.
