PRE-MED EDUCATION
USP's strong tradition of excellence in the basic and health sciences
prepares our graduates to earn post-baccalaureate degrees in medicine,
dentistry, veterinary medicine, and other health professions.
Traditionally, Pre-Med students choose to major in chemistry, biochemistry,
biology, microbiology, or pharmacology and toxicology. The curriculum
in these and most of our programs includes the basic courses required
for admission to medical school. At the same time students will
earn a Bachelor of Science degree that will serve them well if they
change their career plans.
Planning a Pre-Med Program
No single major or course of study will guarantee admission
to medical school.
Beginning with the first year, Pre-Med students receive individualized
counseling by the Pre-Professional Advisor and their Faculty Advisor
in selecting courses to meet their career goals. The Pre-Professional
Advisor also assists each student with application to medical school
and other professional schools.
Most medical schools require a minimum of two semesters of biology
with laboratory; two semesters of inorganic chemistry with laboratory;
two semesters of organic chemistry with laboratory; two semesters
of physics with laboratory; two semesters of mathematics; and two
semesters of English.
At USP, these basic requirements are met by most students during
the first two years of undergraduate education. In their junior
and senior years many students pursue independent study and research
under the guidance of faculty members.
Medical and other Professional Schools
Because of the excellent reputation of USP, the strength of
our science curricula, and the personalized attention given to Pre-Med
students, the percentage of USP applicants admitted to medical school
is exceptionally high.
The scientific foundation obtained by Pre-Med students also qualifies
them for admission to graduate study in master's degree and Ph.D.
programs in their major area of study and related fields.
