Aifuwa Becomes a Five-Time CACC Runner of the Week Recipient
Philadelphia (October
10, 2005) - University of the Sciences in Philadelphia women’s
cross country runner Joy Aifuwa (Edison High School/Edison, NJ)
was again named the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Runner of the Week,
becoming the first women’s cross country runner to earn five CACC Runner of
the Week honors in a season since the award’s inception in 2003.
Aifuwa won her third consecutive race this past Saturday, taking first place honors at Goldey Beacom Invitational at Carousel Park in Wilmington, Delaware. In a heavy rain, Aifuwa bested the field of 95 runners, cruising to a 19-second win over her nearest competitor, Kristie Kershaw of West Chester University.
Aifuwa, a sophomore pharmacy major, completed the rain-soaked 5,000-meter Carousel Park course in 21:16.58. Kershaw finished in 21:35.33 while her nearest CACC competitor, Wendy Muckell from Nyack College, the defending CACC Champion, finished third in 21:41.89.
Aifuwa's performance helped lead the Devils to a third place finish at the meet. USP finished with 88 points, trailing only Philadelphia University (57) and defending CACC team champions Georgian Court University (78).
The former Edison High School athlete is in her second season of competition for the Devils. As a freshman she earned Runner of the Weeks honors three times and finished 2nd at the 2004 CACC Championships earning All Conference and Newcomer of the Year honors.
The Devils will close out the regular season competing at the Cabrini Invitational on Saturday, October 15, 2005 at Belmont Plateau.
