PHILADELPHIA, PA (2/24/06) The University of the Sciences in Philadelphia women’s cross country team’s Oghogho (Joy) Aifuwa (So., Edison High School/Edison, NJ) has been named to the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association All-Academic Team for the 2005 season.

To qualify for this honor an individual must have a cumulative grade point average through the semester of competition of a 3.25 on a 4.0 scale. An athlete must have competed in at least 50% of their teams’ cross country competitions, and finish in the top 30% at the NCAA Regional meet. The individual’s coach must also be a member of the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association

Aifuwa, a pharmacy major with a 3.51 grade point average, completed her second season of competition this fall for the Devils, competing in five regular season meets. Joy captured the individual title at the Delaware Valley College Invitational and followed it up with a fifth place finish at the Maroon and Gold Invitational at Kutztown University. Aifuwa then won her next three races, the Philadelphia Metro Championship, the Belmont Classic and the Goldey Beacom College Invitational leading up to the conference championships. At the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Championships, Joy recorded a third place finish, earning All-Conference Honors and leading the Devils to their first ever CACC Championship. The sophomore harrier then finished 61st at the NCAA East Regional, completing the 6,000-meter course in a personal best time of 23:55 and leading the Devil’s to a 16th place finish, their best ever at the Regional.

Her accomplishments during the season also earned her five CACC Runner of the Week honors. In November, Aifuwa was named to the Philadelphia Inquirer Area All-Academic Team in a vote conducted by the Sports Information Directors of the 28 area schools.

The former Edison High School athlete completed her second season of competition for the Devils. As a freshman, she earned Runner of the Week honors three times, earned All-Conference honors and captured the CACC Newcomer of the Year award.
